When this all dies down, he'll relaunch his TV career with a whirlwind junket of chat shows (morning, afternoon and evening), and do a feature article in the Sunday World magazine. He'll blame his behaviour on a temporary psychosis, drugs or having been abused himself. Textbook stuff, really.

There is plenty more markets in Murica that a scandalised comedian can niche themselve into, especially when they are so high profile. When you have a population of 325 million, a fair fraction of them bat sh@t crazy and lacking morals, you are always going to get an opportunity to revive your career to some extent. Obviously he won't make the money he once did but he will certainly make a career out of comedy.

Opportunities are few and far between this side of the Atlantic so there is no way a very one dimensional (that dimension being not very funny at all) "comedian" could make a decent career again after all these allegations of sexual assault.

Louis CK did despicable stuff but is talented.Al did very little but is an untalented hack so I doubt anyone is in a hurry to give him a break.
It's actually astonishing he ever got sorta famous to begin with.

Creative talent would appear to be incidental in what it takes to make it in showbiz. The reason for his rise to fame in the first place had a lot to do with possessing confidence (even if feigned), bravado and bluster, plus knowing the right people.

Porter seemed to be trying to market himself as a more unlikable Paul O'Grady, and that's what, I think, got him his gigs. Even Tv3 cast him on Blind Date because O'Grady was doing the UK version.

The common denominator for CK and Porter is that they lost someone money-CK had a movie that was scrapped after it was filmed. Cast, crew, and production crew had to be paid, a whole marketing plan had to be cancelled, and no doubt was paid in advance. CK has burned a lot of bridges too, and lost a lot of friends. He'll possibly be allowed do small gigs, but he's angered a lot of people, many of whom defended him when there were rumours abounding, that CK denied or claimed were false.

Porter has had a few defenders (Brendan O'Connor for one, Dave McSavage did too, at one point. But he's withdrawn his support of him). Porter also lost the then TV3 (Now Virgin Media One) station a lot of money. People were paid in advance, it had a large marketing campaign, money from sponsors, advertising slots sold, etc etc... his groping was awful, for sure. But let's be honest here, it wasn't the groping that lost him his career, it was that he cost folks a lot of money. The then DG of TV3 has said that they 'won't rule out' airing the unaired Blind Date episodes, but he'd be lucky if they aired in a 5am slot where even the night shift folks were watching.

Neil Prendiville 'pleasured' himself on a plane-but he didn't cost anyone money, so he didn't lose his job.

He could try that-but then there are accusations going back to secondary school, so that story won't fly. Also, he's already played the mental illness card, what with his appearance on Brendan O'Connor's show with his supposed depression.
(And those in the know have already claimed that that was Porter lying again-he doesn't have any mental health issues).

Oliver Callan, for example, has said that if Porter wants to make a comeback, he needs to address the accusations. But he's been so slow in doing so, I can't imagine he'll be back anytime soon.
Here's hoping he never returns.

A patchwork of deflection, sincerity and sympathy. Also, more crucially, he's probably waiting for the right climate to present it, i.e. when the heat's died down. He's probably got a publicist or two advising him on all this.

but...but...but...."flamboyant and outrageous" people aren't meticulous in their actions... are you suggesting Al is a phony!

Nah, he can dress it up as he pleases, I can't see it wash with the Irish public. He was grating increasingly more on people as he was, becoming more of a cliche and running out of "the only gay in Tallaght village" material, the Irish media outlets can't afford to give him another chance considering how small the market is here and he seems to be very much unliked on the Irish comedy circuit so it;s inconceivable that he will make a career over here again. Especially the nature of the allegations. I can't think of any examples where someone rescued their career over here in the media/public eye after such a downfall in public perception, whatever the crime/misbehaviour.

And he just doesn't have the material or affability to make a career out of comedy in the UK.

The cynic in me definitely thinks this is something he devised himself as a means of attracting some sympathy to, as you say, lay the foundations for resurrecting his career.
The mental health thing has been a bandwagon for so many to hop on and, although there are some great advocates for it (even Bressie INITIALLY - before he soon became a parody of himself), so this would attract some positive PR for him. Turning himself into the victim here.

The whole way through this he has been shown to be calculating in his efforts to make a comeback, yet never directly apologetic, more focusing on him as a flawed person (the sympathy vote) than him actually committing the actions.

But that is just the cynic in me.........

I also don't doubt there are weirdos out there that would concuct this story. I imagine he has a lot of haters

His twitter feed is just a mass of retweet by his select remaining fan boys / girls who haven't given a second thought to what he done and are plying him with the sympathy vote and urging him to make a comeback. Rory Cowan from Mrs Browns seems to be getting behind him (pardon the pun) now also.

Pick a topic which people would/should never mock and which is a sure fire attention getter. Cobble together a non story from a conveniently anonymous source with the express intent of having mainstream outlets pick up on it. The manipulative bent being that anyone calling BS on Al Porter he can conflate it as them belittling suicide instead and get to play the victim.

Ppl on the celebs who disappeared thread noticed that the gaiety panto was supposedly co written by him and Karl Spain but it was not publicised

I’d say they knew it was be bad publicity and ppl would probably not bother going if they knew al kavanagh aka porter was involved

Is this a joke post! You do realise legally he is entitled to do gigs, work in the media! It is the fact that due to the publicity, noone will be willing to hire him or very few will go to his gigs.

It is absolutely nothing to do with a court of law finding him guilty. He has all but admitted doing all this, he just hasn't been apologetic, sincere or accepting any wrongful misdemeanours on his behalf.

Do you honestly think that a radio station, least of all RTE would employ him? There are some idiots running the national broadcaster but there isn't a hope he would be employed as his name is now merely associated with sexual assault to 99% of listeners

He was found out but due to the fact he cost mainly tv3 a lot of lost lolly he won’t be back in public eye any time soon..

He's yesterday's man and I can't see him ever getting another regular gig on national TV or radio. I never understood the appeal in the first place so I for one shan't miss him.

Having said that, I'm uneasy about the whole trial by twitter thing. So much for innocent until proven guilty. As things stand, there appears to be no prosecutions in the offing. He's not helping himself either though. Not only has he now got a nationwide reputation for being a bit handsy (at best), he's not owning it. If he came out fully repentant and accepted that it's no way for someone to behave and that he'll be keeping his hands to himself, he might have some sort of chance of pulling this out if he fire. Mealy mouthed apologies and stories like this one won't wash. It appears he has learned nothing.

Look at cases like Danny Masterson, rape is alleged against him and he is sacked and vilified. Yet there's a love in for Al Porter
