Old owner not sending log book

I bought a second hand car privately for not much money on 4th September, but I still haven’t received the log book.
I filled it out in full and handed it to her to post away as I do for all my previous car purchases. The previous owners phone is now ringing out and I’ve left a text message and a voice message with no reply.
I have her full name and address but I don’t want to go to her house for fear of being reported for harassment. I also done a vehicle transaction enquiry online and ownership has not been noted and I rung department of Shannon but they have received nothing as of yet.
Any ideas how to go about getting around this problem guys?!

A few runs of the toll bridge on the M50 and a few high speed runs past speed vans should do the trick to get the log book

Was just about to suggest that, run up a couple of M50 tolls, sit back, and let them get the fines. You'll see how quick they start calling you.

You can just contact the Tax office or whatever they are called and they will sort out a new one for you. I sold my car recently and couldn't find the log book. Just told the garage I sold it to and they said don't worry, they can just request a new one. I would say he/she either just forgot to do it or lost it.
I think they try to charge €12 for it, but you would probably get away with that due to it not being your fault.
If I sold my car, there is no way I would be answering my phone to the person I sold it to, in the fear something happened and they are trying to blame you.

Before you do anything drastic, just ring Shannon and ask if it's in the works.
They may be 3 weeks behind on changes.

It was a Private sale so I didn’t ask for a receipt.
I would go up the m50 but I would likely end up getting the fines since my name is on the log book as we speak!.

Doesn't mean anything if it's sitting in someone's kitchen drawer rather than in Shannon

Fines should go to whoever is down as the registered owner at the time the car went through the toll.

The folks in Shannon are hardly going to ring Eflow to ask are there any outstanding fines and then give them the details of the new owner.

Ya but if they do send it in, fines might be redirected to new owner if fined are after the date of sale.

What's a log book? Didn't they go out about 20 years ago? All we have for our vehicles are 'certificates of registration', A4 piece of paper. Is that what you want? Or is a servicing logbook?

how would that work?

I'm not saying that's not how it works but I can see many many data protection issues arising here.

I think it's more likely that the fines would be cleared for the old owner and then just disappear

Going to her house (assuming it is not miles away) seems like the most sensible first step.

I think we all know what the OP means. I have been driving only 8 years, and I would still call it a Log Book.

Her house is about 15 minutes away from my own. She hasn’t responded to my messages or calls which she had no problem doing before I bought the car... I asked her in my text about the log book so she knows it nothing to do with a problem with the car.

It's entirely possible of course there is a perfectly innocent explanation for all of this such as her just being on holidays or in hospital or something.

I'd go by the house, make sure to bring a note (a polite note) that you could drop in the post box if there's nobody there.

It's a ****ty situation to be in, next time go post the book together, that way there won't be any misunderstandings.

Back in the day, a log book was just that, a cardboardy yoke you posted when you sold, I think it was stamped and all the owners could be seen, like a passport. But these were scrapped, I wouldn't think anyone 50 would recognise one now? Are people still going to call it a log book when it goes to some sort of digital cert?

I've worked in the motor trade for 12 years and practically everyone - young and old - call them log books.

I think you will find that the old cardboard yoke was also just an A4 (ish) sheet that was folded into a book. I think that you will also find that the new certificate is also folded into an A5 book and can be read that way by turning pages and reading it, you know, like a book.

Ya we get you know the right name for it but it's known as a log book everywhere from sales ads to nct guys to tax offer workers.
If you turned up with your service history booklet when someone asks to see the logbook, you would get a rather funny look.

Not going to lie i'm 19 and call it a log book. Maybe its a backwards Donegal/Derry/Tyrone thing.

I think everyone in the country apart from the odd person calls it a log book. I sold my car recently to a main dealer, they asked me for the log book. People are getting too caught up in the name of it. We all know what each other are talking about. We understand its not called a log book anymore, but that's what we are going to call it so lets move on.

Pedantic debate about the name of the registration document apart.

OP did you check the change of ownership status on the motor tax website > https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/changeOwnership.do

It usually shows up there if they receive the change of ownership and are processing it. If that hasn't changed and you have their address then I'd be paying them a visit. If that fails then there is a process for getting the registration transferred over to you. It involves downloading a form, get a peace commissioner (usually a solicitor) and the AGS to sign it, then Shannon notify the current registered owner that they have received a change of ownership request and they have I think its 30 or 40 days to notify them if they haven't sold the car. If Shannon hear nothing back then they will transfer ownership over to you and issue you a new registration cert.

Just a quick question, did you get the little slip of paper off the end off the log book with your name and their signature stating that the car ownership has been handed over to you?

This process supposed to take 10 working days- can take awile longer!! Ring Shannon to see if it is in the works! Text the seller asking have they sent it. Ask Shannon to send you a new one! Bobs your uncle.

A rf134 needs to be filled out, stamped by AGS and the fee paid.
Its only sent to the registered of
owner.
Asking Shannon won't work. Asking Clare might

I’ve checked online vehicle transaction and there’s no new notifications on that. Also rang them today and they still haven’t recieved the book. They are going to send me out a form to fill out, needs to be stamped a peace commissioner and a Garda and there is ‘fee’ included. Seems rediculous I have to pay to get the car transferred over to me ...
