Motorcheck report or Cartell report? What are peoples preference? Any major differences or do they both do the same thing? Girlfriend has a deposit on a new car, and before pulling the trigger, I just want to run a report to be doubly sure everything is alright

I have used both but found Cartell gave me a much more detailed report including all previous MOT's, what it failed and had advisories on and all.

Not surprising in the slightest. Dealers setting up overnight with high end stock and then disappearing again as quickly seems to be very common.

If on the off chance it's an ex UK car you can check the MOT history for free on the UK Government's website, they also tell you the mileage of the car as well so you can work out if the mileage is genuine.

There is another "front" which is a cheap NCT'd car for less than €1000. Close friend was selling a Renault Clio a few months back. (2003 afaik) and it was for sale for about €600. It was NCT'd and had a months or so tax.
Anyway he had two callers the first day he advertised it and the first come first serve guy got the car. While he wad doing the deal on the street, outside his house, the second car or second caller appeared. Two well hardened blokes in their mid to late twenties. They (nearly) came to blows on the street outside his house as they said they traveled quite some distance to see the car. My buddy couldn't figure out why this was happening. Apparently, cheap taxed and nct'd cars are good for not getting pulled over and blend in better when crims are using cars to get around.

I think someone is drawing conclusions there tbh. A cheap NCTd car isn't awfully difficult to come across to be fair.

Mmmm I dunno, I can't say that's true based on the behaviour of more than a few I knew over the years. AGS know where they'd all live so establishing their daily driver isn't mission impossible. That accepted why bother chopping and changing

They'd not actually have stuff on them that often anyway, if ever. Most operate their business at an arms length basis and the stuff is muled around by various hopeless cases.

..........when growing up neighbouring parishes had more than their share of anti social behaviour in the 80s recession. Many of the joyriders etc "graduated" so to speak into more lucrative activities as they got older. Ireland's first gangland hit was in Cork City, Cork is tiny, you wouldn't need to have your ear too close to the ground unfortunately to notice.

I'd wander around Dublin of an afternoon and notice nothing but back in Cork and you'd spot a few well know heads most days.

The chap in Motorcheck used to post here regularly and even helped out users checking car history. Their website doesn't look like it's been updated for a while now. They're using that pic of the battered Yaris near 10 years now.

Semi-related to this, my friend is doing a college project & was asking me if I knew where companies like say motorcheck or Micksgarage would get their registration - car info. I don't! Other than presumably from the RSA/motor tax office or something.

He wants to find out car type by reg number, anyone know where would he go re: getting access to that database?

It must be fairly simple (presumably not free though) as type a reg into Motorcheck or even the likes of https://www.dublinairport.com/car-parks/long-term-parking returns Make, model and colour

Yea it's clearly available somewhere but he's finding it difficult to figure out where exactly it can be accessed.

Gents, I bought a car from a dealer last week, filled in the logbook and they sent it off. I just checked and motor tax says it was transferred to an individual on the 1st of June, but only notified 21st of September (Friday gone) and a VLC hasn't been issued yet.

If the tax office think it was transferred to me in June I'm going to get shafted for back tax from the date of sale. Would that "transferred to an individual on.." date possibly be the date the dealer bought it? They weren't exactly a SIMI place by a long stretch..and they have had it for sale for a good while.

I put the reg into motor tax on Thursday or Friday last and got the standard "No change fo ownership in the last 3 months" so the 1st of June date is only newly updated, for what thats worth.

Should be there, i haven't gone looking but thats usually where that kind of stuff is. You'd need to know a bit about API scraping and some coding to get it to work like it does on those sites but the raw data will be in there somewhere. If he finds the json file and opens it up it should point him in the direction of where the data is stored.

I dunno, 1/06/18 vs 15/09/18 would be kind of hard to mix up. Unless it was changed for some reason. The tax is also up since June, I don’t know if that might be relevant
