Looks like Supes is out and Supergirl will soon be in. According to THR.

Henry Cavill is pretty bland an actor, and the franchise is in the muck. I wonder how many more nails in the coffin do Warners have to have hammered in before they realise this universe they're trying to force is a dud.

I think physically he was a good fit, I also think he's a decent actor but I think the material he had to work with didn't help. I had high hopes for Man of Steel, but when I saw it I realised I just didn't like Snyder's style (Watchmen aside). I also had high hopes for Superman Returns but it was terrible thanks to studio interference...I've given up hope of a good Superman movie at this point tbh, maybe I'd love the last two movies if I was a kid when they came out, maybe.

I enjoyed Man of Steel, and actually think he is very good for the role. The recent films have just been awful. I blame the writing and directing far more than the actors.

With Cavill and Affleck gone it pretty much leaves the franchise in the mud; I don't honestly foresee Aquaman doing that well, and while I suspect Shazam! might be a surprise hit, not enough to drag the cinematic universe back into the good graces of fans.

As for Cavill specifically, I'll only echo what I said in another thread. He was a good Superman, but not a great Clark Kent, and whether it was direction or the actor Cavill didn't seem to vary his performance enough to make the 'disguise in plain sight' work. Christopher Reeve did it perfectly: little subtle changes in his posture, mannerisms and the way he spoke really sold the idea that people could be fooled by a pair of glasses. Though given how saddled the scripts were with all those Christ metaphors, it was probably the writing to blame ultimately.

How long was he on screen as Clarke for though? It seems like he was around people (other than Lois and his mother) for about 2 minutes. Not exactly a lot of time to seem that different.

2 minutes should be enough for anyone to figure out his secret though :P

The whole point of Superdude is that an unknown actor plays him. No one wants to see a Tom Cruise Superman, or a Tom Hanks Superman, or a Dwayne Johnson Superman.

New blood, new face is what is needed, along with a new line of direction.

IGN reporting Deadline, reporting that WB have 'considered' Michael B Jordan. Which in movie speak is par for the course: spitballing casting is pretty common practise among studio execs. So let's not let THAT rumour get out of hand.

What has been consistently reported is that WB are supposedly focusing on Supergirl rather than Kal'El. But again, not to be taken too seriously 'cos WB have about 25 different DC films in various states of gestation. Like, The Flash still has no director, right?

Cavill's Superman killed more innocent people than most of his enemies did. These moody DC movies might reflect what's going on in the comics currently, but mainstream audiences want the Richard Donner type of Superman movie. Superman Returns also failed because it was exactly like these newer movies, moody and depressing.

It's a pity about Cavill because better scripts could have got him close to Christopher Reeve's level.

Grace has been talking about this for ages so I was a bit surprised to see a thread about it this morning.

Anyway so her latest video is a continuation on the story so far.

But basically it goes to something like: this has been about renewing/renegotiating Cavills contract. He wants more money, WB obviously don't want to pay that much. So this is the latest move with WB making the announcement before Cavill and his team were awake (in USA time). So Cavills team announced something like: hold on for a few hours. So now we're waiting to see another WB announcement later today/this evening.. or else he's gone.

What? Superman Returns was borderline Richard Donner fan fiction. The only thing it had going for it was the nostalgia factor due to its slavish devotion to the Donner films.

I'm gonna copy what I said in the Superhero forum, minor speculation but based on what some journalists and reports are saying.
Sounds plausible though.

WB told Cavill they have no intention of giving him a solo movie for the foresseable future, just a cameo in Shazam and possibly elsewhere. The probably figure no one is interested in MOS 2 or whatever a superman sequel would be.
WB dropped him as they have no future plans for him and there's no contract or deal between them to bring him back.
Cavill and his agent are negotiating in the press to try show his worth and making WB realise the interest in a Cavill led Superman solo.
Cavill posts a weird post showing that he is still interested in the role and character thus showing everyone that the ball is in WB's court.

That's what this situation feels like, it's putting heat on WB to make a decision or lose their Superman.

I enjoyed Cavill in the role (looks & sounds the part) but his character & storyline in DC films are tremendously boring...which are things that aren't the actor's fault. Wonder Woman has done an amazing job at being Superman, just have her in that role.

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman. How hard is it to just get those three right and build from there. Instead it's looking like a recast is needed of two of those, or completely dropping them.

No real surprise in this.
The DCEU really is dying a prolonged and painful death.
Wonder Woman was the best of a bad lot to date and even then a lot of people I spoke with felt it was a fairly poor movie, as do I.
Not on a par with its Marvel counterparts but much better than the DC movies to date.
And celebrated more for its feminism, than its merits.

IMHO they really missed a trick with not adapting the Dark Knight Returns as the foundation block of the Superman/Batman crossover and following extended universe.

The compromises made with the story, and the awful CGI ruined what could have been a real universe genesis moment.

Unless there is a dramatic change in quality, I will be sticking with the Animated DC universe for my movie fix from now on(Although if the quality dip alà the killing joke continues that will finish too)

I was just saying that Tyler Hoechlin's Superman in Supergirl is the best portrayal lately. He was optimistic and happy. Cavill towards the end of Justice League was like this and that's how it should be. He's the light and Batman is the dark

Absolutely, WB has mad an absolute mess of this universe since day one.
The DC trinity is now looking like two have to be recast. The only one character left in that case that people have really connected with in the whole Justice League after that is Wonder Woman.

The fact they have never moved on with a MOS sequel shows total incompetence. I say that as someone who likes but doesn't love MOS but hates most of the DCEU stuff. They finally have a chance to do Superman without Snyder's style and they're not gonna bother. Instead they're gonna give us Supergirl :rolleyes:. I don't get how they make decisions at all, it seems like all the wrong ones though.

I think that would be Whedon's influence. Give him a solo Supes film and we would see if Cail can pull off the dichotomy of the character as you would most definitely get to see Clark in a Whedon led film

Sources in the know tell TMZ, there's no real discussion over the main role because there's no active 'Superman' project. It's true ... Cavill has felt he was underpaid for the role and that's an issue, as is what some say was an underwhelming performance.

We're told if and when the next 'Superman' project is greenlit, Cavill along with others would be in play. If, for example, a director felt he was the perfect guy for the role, he could end up with another cape assuming he and the studio could come to terms.

More or less. They definitely reduced the success of WW to a female character rather than the many positives with that film. Which is a shame, WB seem to only ever learn the wrong lessons unfortunately when it comes to DC.

It's a shame, I've never found Supergirl particularly interesting she's essentially just Superman but less interesting imo. Considering there's a whole tv series dedicated to her as well it seems kinda redundant. You could even just have a Superman/Supergirl film.

I haven't loved any of the DC films even if some have been okay but it's nearly impossible to have faith in this universe going forward the way things are.
