Is indicator usage optional?

What's the story with so many people not knowing or caring to use an indicator? Based on my magic hat statistics, I would say a 80% of drivers are guilty of this behaviour.

I consider it a complete disregard for other motorists on the road not to bother to indicate. Especially on roundabouts, not only do people not indicate, but most of them indicate incorrectly, which is even worse!

If there is one thing I would really like enforced, it's the indicator usage. I know I'm ranting here, but it really irks me.

And you can be assured if you interviewed all drivers concerned 100% of them will tell you they are fantastic drivers.

Is it time the indicators automatically become directional such as when fog lights on one side of a car light up nowadays? Or is that too confusing?

How would that work? They come on once you start turning?

It's probably a bit late at that stage to 'signal your intentions' no?

Although I guess a late signal might be a bit better than none at all.

Not making excuse as I'm using them every time but having grown up on LHD cars what I've noticed is while you changing gear with your right, your left is still able to flick the stalk, on RHD one could miss few moments if not quick enough with moving back from the gearstick.

- Brain is too busy thinking about more important stuff.

The amount of people who don't use them is shocking. I love it when I go for a run. Traffic coming off the 80kph outer ring road have a habit of not indicating while I'm cautiously running across the traffic island.

And of course those that do indicate force their way in front of you half the time.

ah indication - and esp on roundabouts!

I remember one person saying they indicate that they are going onto a roundabout - I asked what was the other option and was met with a blank face.

Same driver also indicated going around some bends

I think the most annoying are the ones who give a single blip of the indicator halfway through the manoeuvre. They are obviously aware that the indicators are there and should be used, but can't engage their brain cell to do it in a meaningful way.

Yes, its optional all right. Most people use them, most of the time, but its kinda up to the driver. I would always indicate for example, if on my own in the car, and generally focused on driving. But if you are having good crack with your passengers, are on the phone, bopping along to a good tune, or in more of a hurry, then yeh, they can tend to get sidelined. To each his own on this one I think.

So the law says that they have to be used, but their non or incorrect use has no bearing on liability in an accident yes?

I wonder had anyone been called up on that specific paragraph of legislation relating to the use of indicators.

It wasnt too bad in Ireland when I left 4 years ago, and it surely cant be as bad as the German/Swiss here, they dont care who's around them its a strict no usage policy.

It's only optional on BMW's.

As a BMW driver, everyone is wrong, I am right. The indicator is an optional extra, but I went for heated seats instead.

Newer VAG cars fog light comes on as a turning light. It's actually quite useful.

I would expect the Germans and Swiss to be the models of indicator usage.
