And ding 36. The triple exp community day (turned into 6x due to constant use of eggs) was an amazing boost to get through the level. Up to 355 / 365 with a Regice caught and I'd guess at least one if not two more of 'em before 37 is done.

Am finding it tough going recently. My PoGo activity has dropped a lot over the last 3 months. Seem to be stuck on lvl 38 forever, a local gym rival has recently hit 39, I was at 38 about a month before them!
Lack of raid participation is my issue, have yet to do Regice and only did about 15 raids overall for Latias/Latios.
300K to go until lvl 39.

He can be a bit of a pain to catch; likes to jump high and punch quite a bit as a heads up. I'm 1 for 3 so far but the last one was without berries (because I could not be bothered).

I hit level 39 last week and I'm over 10% of the way to 40 already, mostly because of the extra xp from the event. I wonder if they're ever going to add more levels?

No indication that this rumored level cap increase will happen.
Theory is that if they do add more levels that they will be a gate on level up beyond just XP. ie. Badge’s earned,

Or they would even out the curve further; i.e. level 50 is let's say 6 million exp but level 40 is now only 1 million letting more people level up higher faster and feel good about it.

Level 36 reached.
Took almost 2 months since we were on holidays in Pokehell for much of it.
If we hadn't been able to lucky egg 7 Ultra Friends in the last week, it would have taken us another month.
Just over 1/3 of the way to Level 40.
47,000 Pidgeys waiting to be evolved.

Levelled up to 39 at the weekend. So, while it took about 6 months to go from 37 to 38, only took just over 3 months to go from 38 to 39.

Maybe I'm playing a bit more, have done a few more raids. Getting about 5 or 6 Ultra friends with a lucky egg on, and the other few with 50,000xp made a big difference though. Along with a couple of events too I suppose.

I would fully concur. I found the grind from 37 up to 39 to be intolerable. (also a new PC game in April slowed me up a bit!!)
But the new friendship system has really pumped up my XP, currently 1.5 million short of lvl 40. I got 500K from lucky egg "ultra friend" leveling a few days ago. I plan to do the same with another 10-12 next week.
I think psychologically once I hit lvl 39 I realised I was in the home stretch.

Dexwise I'm at 371/373 with a workmate going to trade me a Tropius.
So Relicanth is my current white whale.

About 650k short of level 40 now. Friendship has really slowed (I'm ultra with most of the reliables, but even some of the reliables have tired of the process and aren't opening gifts) and nobody wants Regi, so it might take a little more time than expected.

It might go easier than you think. Work on lower level friends.
Try a lucky egg for city journeys. I had 70 lucky eggs stashed from spending coins on boxes earlier in the year. Halfway through lvl39 I just started putting them on for my cross city commute.
I’m 150K shy of lvl 40, expect it by the weekend.

I hit level 40 last week while doing a raid and going ultra with one person. Ended up 197 more items in my bag than allowed!

Even though level 40 is fairly devalued now, I'm still quite chuffed and hope I gain something from it eventually, like the ability to submit pokestops. And i do like the lack of a progress bar!

Well only in follow up I'm now halfway (well 2.46MM) in but I got a series of maximum friends coming up in about 20 to 25 days that should net me a .5 to 1 mil boost depending on if I can egg them or not. I'd guess beginning to mid October is when I'll do my final ding. Sadly I'll miss the community triple exp event due to real life which would have sped things up.

Levelled up to 40 a couple of week ago.

So it took me:
6 months approx to go from 37-38
3 months from 38-39
2.5 months from 39 to 40.

Friends system really made a difference for me. I thought I'd never see 40 when it took so long from 37 to 38.

Made it to level 38 yesterday AND Niantic announced double XP for evolves.
I think I've about 300 low life that I can clear out of storage, so I won't have to spend coins on that for a while.
This will be the last farming evolve for me, I only hung on to them until now in the hope of a double evolve XP event.

Niantic have turned off the tap on farmables anyway, so I'll have to rely on friendships to push on from here.
