RTE - 25 Irish People Defining Irish Culture 2018

I must admit I do not know who the vast majority of these people are. However, I feel that there should at least be a sportsperson (not McGregor), politician and perhaps a chef in the list.

On further reflection, this list contains 6 men and 19 women. That is peculiar, especially given the men that were selected. It is as if the list was created by a woman and one who is willing to promote mediocrity for the sake of the sisterhood. That could be just my fragile masculinity talking.

New Ireland is an island close to Indonesia, surely those ppl ain't Irish, its all in the word , southstar. To become an American citizen, if born to non American citizens outside American one must swear an oath forgoing all former allegiance. So your brother is no longer Irish, by his own hand.

Sorry to disappoint, but recent genetic research suggests that the Irish, English, Scots, and Welsh all share a common ancestry. The genetic influence of subsequent invaders such as the Celts, Anglo-Saxons, and Normans are far smaller than historians have tended to assume -- and so the British and Irish share far more in the way of kinship than would make you happy. Stephen Oppenheimer's The Origins of the British has much more on the research.

Meh! I'll wager the author moves in the same social lovee set as quite a few of these and decided to throw their unknown mates into a list with international talent like Ronan and Gleeson. They'll be getting quite a few "oh my god!"s and air kisses and free designer Gins next Saturday noight. Next year no one will remember who half these people were.

All humans share common ancestry. I'm talking about ppl who claim to be Irish but self identify by their actions to be either German, American or Ethiopian. I could claim to be north Korean or Australian but I wasn't born in either of those countries.

That book is seriously out of date. There were two material population upheavals since the Ice Age; the spread of farming from the Levant via Southern Europe and the Yamnaya/Bell beaker culture that spread the Indo European languages from the Pontic Caspian Steppe from the mid Bronze Age onwards.

That flag pole with the smoke coming out of it reminds me of the time I was in an art gallery and came across some of the weirdest shit I've ever seen.

This really confused me. I thought some workman had left his paint bucket behind until I saw the light bulb in it. I never figured out if the sign was part of the 'statement' the artist was making or it was legitimately not working.

This kind of 'art' means absolutely nothing to the majority of people.

Also, the title of the article does not say "Irish people" but rather just "people". The Op includes the term Irish people as an aside to the article. Irish culture is not defined by Irish people; it is defined by people living and breathing and sh*tting in Ireland.
