Welcome to the Waterford GAA discussion thread.

This is consistently the most active thread don the GAA forum. As a result, discussion can get quite heated. But there are certain things posters must realise are simply not OK to post:

- Personal abuse of anyone be they other posters, players, managers, referees, pundits etc. Any personal abuse will result in an infraction or a ban.

- Rumours about players'/managers'/anyone's personal lives. This should be self explanatory. Apart from being a dickish thing to do, it can lead to legal trouble for Boards.

- Trolling. Again, self explanatory. Trolls will be banned for a long time.

- Accusations of trolling. Report a post if you suspect it to be trolling. Do not call a troll out on thread as this will be considered back seat modding.

- Speculation into the identity of another poster. This is a site-bannable offence.

This list is not exhaustive. Either myself or another mod may add to this as we see fit. Just because a certain behaviour isn't listed, doesn't mean you can't be banned for it. The general Boards.ie rule of Don't be a Dick always applies.

If you feel a post breaks the rules, simply click this underneath the post in question to report the post and a mod will deal with it as they see fit.

So be civil to each other and happy posting.

Given that the thread regularly descending into tit for tat insults between posters, From now on, it won't be a card but a ban straight away for anything like this. The mod warning is clear in the first post but yet people still ignore it.
Also, I'd like to remind people of the ban on discussing players'/managers'/officials' private lives without any substance. You can be getting into libelous territory there. So a zero tolerance policy will be enforced as well.

Yeah, we beat both Tipp and Limerick in minor, both of which contested the munster final. It wasn't a stellar year, but there was plenty of talent and spirit on display.

Secondly, given how strong the Cork U21 team was in PuC that day, it was no surprise that they won, what surprised me was how well we played and, again, the notable talent that was on display.

Granted no superstar jumped out on any of the matches, but a lot of very good potential in there.

Given how young many of our current senior panel are, all we need really is a couple of new faces each year for the next 2-3 years to keep the squad developing.

Absolutely. All you can do is be competitive and that we were in both grades. There were a few u21s looked well up to scratch, particularly Prunty. Possible future long term full back. The minors had a couple of serious wins aswell so plenty to work with.
Were never going to shoot the lights out every year at underage given we have a small enough pool. But theres a core group at senior there now to challenge for the next number of years and once we remain competitive at underage level the talent pool will trickle along nicely.

Paul Flynn played a big role in management team with Seán Power. I would imagine that he wants Flynn involved if he is taking the gig.

Imo Players have to have there say, as there the ones who will be breaking there backs for 7/8 months of the year. If the wrong man came in we should were some of the 'golden' generation packing it in. The retirement age is lowering in the GAA due to the crazy demands and players want what's best for them as a group

Players are entitled to a say but this seems like they are making all the decisions. Maybe what they need is a manager that will challenge them and focus on getting the best out of them on the field. Jackie Tyrell wrote in his book that he barely spoke to Cody outside of hurling. And they’re from the same club but he was consumed with trying to impress the man.
The popular choice isn’t always the best.

They were informed that before Dereks departure he gave a member of the county board a list of potential successors. On that list was Pat Ryan, Pat Mulcahy, John Allen and Anthony Daly. When contacted Paddy Joe Ryan siad he knew nothing of this list and there is still no update on who the new manager will be

A list of successors, wow!

Talk over the past few days that Paraic Fanning has put his name forward and been assembling a management team to present to the county board. The players are believed to be in favour of a certain former Cork goalkeeper which was surprising to hear.
Still no talk of Mattie Kenny which is a bit disappointing, seemed like a ready made candidate and was apparently interviewed originally.
I think everyone would have hoped to have a manager in place by now for them to scout the local championships for new talent.

Pauric Fanning is a no for me as he would be quite defensive as he would of learnt a lot from Davy Fitz. Him been a local too

So going by the former Cork goalkeeper it's either Donal Og Cusack or Ger Cunningham for the role but none really set the world on fire in there last IC roles

A story going around that Ryan was taking the job, and was asked to meet the players. Arrived to find 5 players waiting to interview him, he walked out and told the CB he wouldn't take the job.

Not sure if it's shinronesque horseshlt but it's travelling around.

Did he expect the full panel to be there or was he insulted by the fact only 5 players turned up to bacisally find him out or something else ???

If not already, we are seriously in danger of becoming the laughing stock of the country with this total fiasco. At this stage if the rumours are even half true our county board might as well either let Derek interview and select his successor, or beg him to come back - because they appear to have no handle or say on what is happening otherwise.

Seriously now the way Derek has spoken to the media about how he might come back in a couple of years etc.. gives the impression that he has divine rights and the ultimate say in the future of Waterford Hurling - no disrespect to Derek but he gave it his best shot, he was given plenty of time, he was given everything he looked for where possible and in the end he came up short in his aim of achieving the Holy Grail - time for him to move away entirely and let someone else have their turn without his approval.

Whoever takes over as manager must be allowed to put their stamp, tactics, selectors and discipline on the team as they see fit - the must be allowed to succeed or fail on their own merits and without the approval or disapproval of the past management.

As someone who has been involved with some of the panel for the passed 25 years in some cases & 15+ in majority of others, id hope if I was a panel member he might be able to put someone in place for us to help us challenge for an all Ireland! So I think he is within his rights to suggest alternatives to him!

I would infact trust Dereks hurling judgement then the same people who gave us our home fixtures debacle amongst other farces in the past 10 years. The same people looking at Walsh park scratching their heads!

Re player power etc, I don't know the details of that, I have gotten the same horse sihte WhatsApp that has origins close to co board members, the crux of the issue from the mgr in question is betting from 16/1 to 1/5 and the national media running stories that he is all set to take the roll over - including statements from Paddy Powers!! This all took place whilst the same individual had not spoken to his family or work on it! There are national newspapers & major sports journalists running this story.

We are in a complete mess AGAIN a laughing stock AGAIN from the same antiquated people who are not capable of running the counties GAA. :mad:

When is it all going to end?

Most of the panel are under 30, how many of the panel do you reckon he knew before they were even 5 years of age? He has known the majority of the panel for the past 15+ years? The minor / u21 winners that are on the panel are still under 23, so you reckon he’s been involved with those lads since the age of 8?
Serious exaggeration there I’m afraid!

In what other county does the outgoing manager offer a number of potential successors? The only case I can think of that is any way close is Tipperary where a selector from the previous regime has been promoted twice, once with it being announced the year before he actually took over. Selectors being promoted isn’t totally unusual, but for a manager to pick a list of candidates who’ve had no involvement in his regime is utterly bizarre, if indeed this has occurred.

The whole situation is certainly a big mess, that much we can agree on!

For the record i am not dragging Derek into it.

I stated firstly that if the rumours are true that he drew up a list of potential successors and gave it to the county board, is this not dragging himself into it.

Secondly I heard him say himself on more than one occasion in the media that he "might come back in a few years time". is this not being a bit presumptuous - he did not say he might like another go and throw his hat in the ring, he spoke as if it was a foregone conclusion and as a man who is very deliberate and eloquent in his speaking there was no doubting his words.

I have no doubt Derek might make a better fist of picking a manger than our County Board, but i still believe a manger should not name or be involved in appointing his successor. Forgive the "Doubting Thomas" in me, but i am not sure how Derek or for that matter any manager would actually want someone coming in doing things differently and turning out to be more successful.

I just wish we could move on and quickly
