Turas Nua, Beware, understand what you may be getting into.

I have been on Turas Nua's books with about 3 months, they haven't done anything worth while for me during this time, but I obliged their requests for meetings, as I understood at the time it was part of the social welfare system and their requirments.

Now I have since got a job on my own merit, so I contacted my appointed rep at Turas Nua just to be polite and to sign of their system, after a friendly chat and me telling her the company name and the position I have been given, she then tells me they will need to contact my new employer to verify my employment and ensure my benefits will be correct (BS), this was the point I sniffed a rat and realised she didn't have my best interests at heart (How naive am I ).

Upon checking the web about Turas Nua, I only now realise they are a private company appointed by the Department of Social protection. They are a profit making company and not a state body.

I have told them very firmly not to contact my new employer, but they have said that I signed a acceptance form with them at the start and this allows them to follow my progress, and part of that is contacting employers.

I contacted Citizens Information, who put me onto the Data Protection Commissioner, their reply was if "I had signed an agreement, then Turas Nua may be entitled to contact my employer".

This is a ludicrous situation, I don't want them hassling my new employer, and no doubt they are trying to see if they can get others in the door as well as earning their own commission.

I don't know if there is much I can do at this point.

So this is more a word of warning to others who may be asked to sign up with Turas Nua and what their motives are, because you are not number one priority.

Sure when I was with them, they put me on the same course twice. The two "courses" had slightly different names, but the subject matter was the exact same!!

Yeah I'm on it for the second time and finish in October. One of the lads I met who I knew from the first time I did it told me there were some doing it for a third time.

I'm guessing it all goes back to the Troika being unhappy at the number of long-term unemployed back then. So the government brings these cowboys in to keep us occupied and also whilst you're on JobPath you're technically not part of the unemployment stats. It's win win for everyone except for those "invited" to take part.

Little or nothing to do with the Troika, more to do with our flawed way of measuring a successful economy

It's (Turas Nua, Seetec) all optics man. It's enough to fool enough outsiders looking in for a while and then when the jig is up, it's on to the next thing.

That's why it's optics. It can inadvertently fool the public though, "sure look you have Seetec, job bridge etc etc tis grand."

A company a family member works for announced 400 jobs over the next 2 years in recent times. Minister and the IDA in a big flap about it to be there and the news cameras followed.

What they didn't mention that 300 out of the 400 positions would likely have to be filled by people from over seas due to language skills needed. They're in for some shock when they arrive and see what the rents are like here.

I've been busy job hunting since I got laid off recently.I haven't really engaged with the jobpath apart from turning up.I didn't think they were offering me anything constructive anyway.

Now they've suddenly mentioned my JSA getting cut if I'm not jobhunting which i am .

Is there a procedure in place so you know where you stand when dealing with them?

If you ve been engaging there is nothing they can do. They can't refer you back to DSP I'd you have been going to meetings. I would speak to a supervisor on there and mention you where threatened by your advisor.

However if you havnt been turning up to the meetings they will refer you to DSP. They will threaten you with JSA being cut off, make you sign a letter stating that, 'you understand your JSA will be reduced by 44 euro for one week if you do not re enagage'. DSP will then 're engage you with Turas Nua. If TN refer you back again, your job seekers will be cut by 44 euro for one week and they will try re engage you again. If you fail to turn up this time you will be reduced by 44 euro for 6 weeks.

They can't refer you if you have been engaging with them going to meetings. So that shouldn't have been said to you. You can complain officially through their own complaints procedures. Write an email to hello@turasnua.ie. Or speak to your advisors supervisor. In terms of rights in this situation if that doesn't sort it. Go to your local citizens info office.

You still have to engaged with them by law if you have been referred to them however. Untill your time is up in afraid. Especially since you've signed the personal progression plan at the start you have a right to refuse to sign this. They usually leave people alone after that.

did 2 one day courses with them, like being back in primary school with the way the tutor was talking to us mortifying...and i got a certificate from it..for what?? attending??:rolleyes:

and you should see the way my guidance officer has re-written my CV you'd swear i'm capable of working for NASA...can imagine HR people have a right snigger at it

i've lost my patience with them a long time ago everytime i go in there its the same old rigmarole ...utter waste of time, so i've decided i'm not attending any more appointments they can cut my dole i don't care, i'll find my own job in my own time in my own way

Im a qualified teacher yet my advisor rewrote my CV tailoring it towards businesses and companies, adding that 'My previous experience required me to lead teams and meet company deadlines'. Theres no chance of a mix up as all my teaching experience was clearly listed under work history, ive never worked with a company or business besides Dunne's Stores stacking shelves almost 10 years ago and the odd bit of bar work collecting glasses throughout college. Hardley team leadership.

Do they pull these people in off the street? She hasnt a clue.

The ones I dealt with while nice people had backgrounds in retail and hospitality so really all that qualified them to advise me on finding a job was what ever training seetec gave them and the fact that they had a job themselves. My CV was like double dutch to them, no clue what to do with it and they knew that I knew it and as a result was referred to web sites like done deal and facebook as well as the usual monster/jobs.ie to search for jobs :rolleyes:

I got a call yesterday reminding me about me introductory meeting tomorrow, first thing she said was if I don't engage my benefits can be cut, got a text this morning saying the same thing, they really want you to know they have that dangling over you don't they?

You should see the texts you get if you miss a meeting! Ten minutes afterwards they start coming in and they read like you've murdered someone.

Think I must just call out the local Intero office and sign up for it there.

As a teacher you would have led a team of students and met company deadlines,the company being the school you worked for and presumably you had teaching/curriculum deadlines?

It's amazing how truthfully you can spin a CV lol

Since June you can opt to do a CE Scheme and you will be off the live register if you do.

What about the courses they are offering - do you have to pick any if you are not really interested in it as it looks like the want you to do anything and it doesn't matter if it collide with your work or not.

Haha very true but schools arent companies and students arent 'teams'. Im aware I can reword the cv myself, as I have done. Regardless schools dont accept cv's anyway, I can only apply through online applications. She'd know that if she had any clue about what she's doing

How do they define 'engaging ' and what are their disciplinary procedures when you don't engage?

Their seems to be a lack of transparency with the organisation and their procedures,I would go so far as to describe them as hustlers.

I'm only with them a short time and will be returning to work on my own steam soon without their help

Because they don't get commission, go over their heads and straight to intero. They don't want you doing courses they'd rather you secured a job scrubbing toilets than go down the education route.

In short yes they do. Only qualifications necessary to be a TN advisor is Leaving cert. Couldn't believe it when I seen that. Then I met my PA. Clueless is an understatement.
