He couldn't get out of it fast enough, despite his lofty and overly ambitious claims that he'd have it all sorted out by July '17. He almost collapsed the government with his flip flopping on the Abortion Referendum before he was taken aside and spoken strongly too and then had a pardon the unfortunate expression "rebirth" so to speak and suddenly saw the light did hat he was told. And he's been a complete disaster in handling Brexit. That the Brits are even worse doesn't by default make Coveney look alright. He comes across like a duck paddling frantically beneath the water whilst trying and failing to look calm above it...except he doesn't look calm. As for the Deputy Prime Minister title; it simply doesn't exist and is inherently disrespectful and some would say offensive to the office to change the name to appear more West Brit or whatever the hell his objective was in applying such a monicker to himself and the office. It was a very ill-judged thing to do. We don't have a Prime Minister so how can we have a Deputy PM? We have a Head of Government. Has any Irish Tánaiste ever referred to themselves as "Deputy Prime Minister" ever before? I sincerely doubt it, but I'm pretty sure if they were they were criticised for doing so.

ButtersSuki wrote: » Ah come on now, that's a pretty pathetic defence. If the Taoiseach ever called himself the "Prime Minister" of Ireland he'd be ridiculed and vilified by the press for doing so. Same applies here, or at least should. The title is "Tánaiste", not Deputy Prime Minister and he should respect the office by only using the official title. Do you propose the Gardaí call themselves The Police now? And so on. I don't believe it was an accident to use Deputy Prime Minister and not "Tánaiste" btw. As for Coveney's relationship with foreigners - he seems an awful lot more concerned with what they think of him than his own countrymen. I'd suggest there's a Fateen-like insecurity underneath the sheen.
dxhound2005 wrote: » His "relationship" with foreigners is that he is our Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade.Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade with responsibility for Brexit He has held the position of Tánaiste for the last eight months. You said: Coveney btw only recenly added “Tánaiste” to his Twitter handle. He up to that point had “Deputy Prime Minister” only and only added “Tánaiste” AFTER being called out on it publicly. How recently is that, and who called him out?
ButtersSuki wrote: » I don't have the exact date as believe it or not I don't wait by the phone for a twitter update from Simon Coveney but it's definitely in the last 2 months. He was called out on it by a DUP (from memory, but definitely a Nordie) member and changed it. Said DUP person referred to him as such (DPM) and was corrected by someone from Young Fine Gael (from Meath if memory serves me correctly) "we don't have a DPM in Ireland, we have a Tánaiste". Said DUP member then promptly showed Coveney's Twitter handle and alas, the word "Tánaiste" was visibly absent, and said "that's what Coveney refers to himself as" (or words to that effect). Obviously someone had a word with Simon as it was added VERY quickly after this (same or next day). I'm walking my dogs right now and on the phone only so can't provide full links but I'm sure you'll find it fairly easily if you look. They should have told him to remove DPM completely IMO. I'm not making any of this up, you can check for yourself. BTW, for someone who claimed not to be a fan, you're certainly putting up quite a defence. Apologies for the incorrect spelling of "recently" in my earlier post; as I said I'm walking the dogs and on the phone, though I try and avoid typos they will occasionally occur.
dxhound2005 wrote: » You're mixing me up with someone else. I never claimed to be anything. I can't check it, not being on Twitter. I can find zero on Google to support any of what you claim. Any searches for Coveney Twitter always shows Tánaiste. All our recent holders of the position are on Google as Deputy Prime Minister, e.g. Fitzgerald, Burton, Cowen, Gilmore. Why is it not OK for the current office holder to use it?
