By a country mile the most inept of all football pundits I have seen in more recent years (and that's saying something) and a big reason I try to avoid rte coverage of football.

The guy literally spent the 2014 world cup complaining that Colombia (who had the best defensive record in all south American qualifying) were headless chickens who have no idea how to defend, and complaining about an Argentinian defender called Fernando, who point blank doesn't exist.

I don't mind him as a person, and while I wouldn't go out of my way to listen he can make a surprisingly good interviewer to be fair, but as a football pundits he should have packed it in at least a decade ago.

The way he shafted Roy Keane during his FA trial for the Haaland tackle speaks volumes for a man who places such importance on 'character'. He, the ghostwriter for the autobiography, threw Keane under the bus by stating he felt the tackle was deliberate. On balance, he must be admired for remaining steadfast in his criticism when he called it as it is about the Irish team, a squad of good players, who were playing embarrassing hoofball. He saw through Charlton's bull**** and the vitriol he faced during and after Italia 90 was slanderous.

Keane's name on the covers, he takes responsibility for what appears in print between them. Bottom line I'd say. Player's fault for not factchecking if he wasn't happy with what appeared.

He talked a fair amount of sh1te, but unlike the majority of football pundits he was at least interesting, when everyone was fawning over Ronaldo a decade ago it was good to hear someone at least acknowledge his negative traits, also he was nearly ran out of here for making a valid point about how Ireland played at Italia 90, for me RTE's coverage will be a whole lot duller from now on.
