Actually you're right, looking at other baby sparrow pics, I just presumed it was a baby swallow as it was directly below the swallow nest ! weird !

There is a lot of (hopefully reasonably subtle) post work on this. Skin clean up, cooling specular highlights, sharpening eyes and adding selective colour, a lot of painstaking dodging and burning to create depth in the face, replacement of the background, three to four LUTs and a B/w layer all set at low percentages but masked off the skin at least 50%, significant de-noising to create a waxy, painterly look with a hi-pass filter to bring back sharpness in the small detail and an unsharp mask to bring back contrast. a little liquifying where required. Think thats about it.

I was there on June 10th... flat calm on the trip over and some fog for an hour or two which added to the atmosphere... saw a good few puffins early on in the morning, none later on in the day.

Not sure when they start to leave the island but just looked back in Lightroom and I have photos of puffins there on 2nd July 2017 and 2nd July 2016.

When I started doing long exposures, I read this guide here. It's full of great advice, so I'd recommend reading it if you want to do more. Just another point, if you want to do it properly, I wouldn't use cheap filters on the lens. Your image is the light coming in through the lens, so the last thing you want to do is compromise it with cheap filters.

Awec, most of these "on black" images are taken in natural light. The background is darkened down in LR and PS. Animals are a pain as they have so much fur and the fine details can't be handled by a simple selection. Usually I end up dodging in at 1000% or greater magnification.

Ah, that must take forever. Great dedication, but the result is fantastic. We used to have a westie, they are brilliant dogs.

Interestingly, I actually just watched a Scott Kelby video today on a technique he uses to easily select hair in photoshop. It's a free video.

I'd say on reflection you're both right, thanks! The location is a small hill in Cheshire in England and it does have resident peregrines (for a few years now) but I've probably been seeing mostly kestrels... gonna review them all later!
