Thinking of relocating to Donegal (Lough Eske region) from Cork city for a quieter life, anybody relocated to Donegal in the past few years, got any advice?

Seems as though there are not many posters on this forum.

I am relocating to North West Donegal in the next couple of months but don't know much about the county.

I just keep googling Donegal using different search criteria. I am especially interested in the flora and fauna of the hills in Inishowen.

I am from Lough Eske - its beautiful really and has Harveys Point & Solis Castle Hotel which are top quality.

What would you like to know? Its cheap to live there, you are a short drive to larger cities and towns such as Sligo, Letterkenny etc... You can also pop over to the UK cities in less than an hour, Derry etc

Lots of beaches, fantastic links golf course @ Murvagh....

Amazing food in Donegal town - even better than most of what I eat in Dublin! Big tourism so if you want to meet new people and socialise its also great!

You might need to get a look at the full map for Donegal county. Lough Eske area would be classed more South/South West whereas the North West of the county would take in areas like Bunbeg, Derrybeg, Crolly, Gweedore, Annagry etc etc.

Its easy for us as we know the different regions or at least know where the places area geographically. As others have said its not the busiest of forums so you may have to wait for a while until someone from that area is logged in and sees your post. I would know lots of areas around the county but not well enough to give specific answers unless its my local area.

Is it definitely Lough Eske/Donegal Town area that you propose to relocate to?

If you broaden your request to include people living in that area who haven't relocated there, and ask specific questions you might get a better response.

Stay away from the lough m'laddie for there's said to be monsters in those depths and cannibals in dem hills. Manys a braver man than ye ventured out on those rainy moors only never to be seen again. I lived in Donegal for 2 years, Inishowen specifically, nicest place I've ever lived away from home. I was sad to leave it.

I've only just read all these posts now, two months later, thanks for all the info.. still in Cork but if we are going to move up to Donegal, we would want to be near the lough/Donegal town as some family are there (not mine!) and for photography reasons too. Been to a few places in Donegal, love Inishowen but it's a bit far away for me to get back to my family in Dublin (don't like driving). It would be fab to live up there though for a while.

When (if) the A5 dual carriageway gets completed in a few years, north Donegal will be closer to Dublin timewise than south Donegal.

Even without the A5, Google Maps gives Letterkenny to Dublin as 3hrs 3min and Donegal Town to Dublin as 3hrs so there's no real difference between north and south Donegal travel times.

Im from Donegal Town area, was there anything in particular you wanted to know.

It is quiet, friendly folk, with a good weekend night life in the town. Lough Eske is a very nice area, about 10 min drive from town. 2 great hotels in the Lough area if a little expensive. Drop me a pm if you would like any other info.

ive lived in donegal town 21 years nice town lidl Aldi Supervalu are your main supermarkets, loads of restaurants (as long as you dont have any dietary needs like vegetarian , your choice is pretty limited then - really not catching up on that at all)

apache pizza, several takeaways including a new supermacs opening soon (!)

you can get most other things but no dunnes, pennys tesco you have to go to sligo or letterkenny (or enniskillen ) for those.

hardware stores os you can get most things but no woodies.

donegal town i think is one of the most expensive areas to buy property in donegal, there seems to be very little to rent as well and rents as a result are climbing, when i walk past estate agents i am suprised what people have houses up for (whether they get it its a different matter.)

just saw a site on the lakeside of the road round lough eske at 80,000

if you have any more specific questions put them up and im sure we will try and answer

apparently abbots are recruiting (a lot) if youre looking for work

Id like to get opinions of local Donegal folks on the likes of a USA foreigner moving to Donegal.

The only reason I ask is that Donegal doesn’t see the number of tourist as Galway, Clare, Kerry, etc. so might not be as keen or tolerant on having a foreigner move in next door.

When I look at house prices across the country you get a lot more house for your money in Donegal as opposed to anywhere else. A small house along the coast away from big cities would be ideal

Have been to Ireland many times over the last 15 years but stay mostly in the Galway or Kerry area, beautiful areas but far too many tourists for a full time residence

Any info would be appreciated

In the past 20 years, Donegal (and Ireland as a whole, not just Dublin) has welcomed large communities of people from South Africa, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, India, Philippines, England, Brazil & Africa. There are US Multinationals based in Donegal.
Your nationality doesn't matter to 99% of the population (although there are racists, they'll be muttering to themselves and it's not overt or violent) and so long as you are a decent person, then you'll be treated and welcomed regardless of your nationality.

One of the big things with regards to tourist numbers is the fact that the places mentioned there all have rail connections to Dublin. Donegal doesn't have that luxury.

And as Pique said, your nationality won't be an issue in Donegal.
