Welcome to the Mayo GAA discussion thread - Chapter 3, yer trotting them out quicker than a Mills & Boon Romance !.

This is one of the most active forums on Boards.ie. As a result, discussion can get quite heated. But there are certain things posters must realise are simply not OK to post:

- Rumours about players'/managers'/anyone's personal lives.

Though i ate the head of mate who said it on Saturday night, the more i think of it the early exit might be a blessing, as in if we had to go out probably best to go now rather than after an AI semi final or final defeat in late summer. Or even worse have got to the super 8's and fallen flat. Imagine being beaten by Galway or Roscommon there :eek: Lads can enjoy a rare summer now, recharge the batteries and come back next year. Also delighted to hear the two young lads gone to the USA, exactly what they need. Im actually excited now about the new season but maybe thats just the hopeless romantic Mayo optimism we are all imbued with. Im an ABR for the rest of the cship.

No way Andy will retire . I do think next year his role will be impact sub though
The one I'd be most worried about is Keith Higgins . Physically there is no need for him to retire but I'm not sure he has the motivation to do it all again
However perversely this early exit may change that !
Same goes for Seamie. He may well have called it a day this year too but now ........
Having heard Clarke speak a few months back I don't think he will
Boyle again like Andy has plenty to offer in a squad . As long as he is happy with that
Barry Moran will retire I'd say .
And then there is Parsons.........

So overall I don't expect the large scale exodus some do

Yeah, listening to any interviews Andy has given over the last few years, he is going nowhere until he is thrown out the gate. How many times was he out in front winning ball on Saturday? Just had nowhere to go once he won it, but he won it! He does have committments outside of football, but his line of work lends itself to his football career. He has always said he has an understanding wife too!

I've seen McLoughlin mentioned too which makes no sense to me? He isn't even 30 yet and is showing no signs of slowing down so I can't see him going anywhere either.

Really hope AM doesn't retire. He is one class act. 'Sides, you don't go from winning Footballer of the Year to the scrapheap in a mere 6 months.

I'd hope the likes of Andy, Keith and Boyle stay around but I'd much prefer for the young lads to step up and take over their mantle. I was really worried about our midfield options after Seamie got injured but doc looks like he has finally got his best position and could reign there for the next 5 to 10 years! Coen as well looked very good at the start but faded, maybe midfield is his position as well.

with regards Rochford, he's a mystery wrapped in an enigma. how can someone who makes really strange squad selection options, who has no consistency when it comes to formations, substitutes or tactics turn around and be very unlucky in losing 3 times to arguably the best team ever. and we really should have beaten Dublin at least once. so I'm lost in where I stand with him. the loftus substitution was a strange one, o Donoghue should definitely have seen more time on Saturday (or possibly started!) and Boland has disappeared off the face of the planet!

Surly it il come down to who the new manager will be for a lot of theses players.
There has to be a change on the sideline otherwise the break the players get will be for nothing if they are coming back to the same ol same oh.

Very valid point that I think would be good for Mayo football. We really need someone new but Rochford should be given the choice since he has put the work in then last few years. If he goes, it's hard to know who would take the job as it would be a rebuilding job of some sorts

Has he though is this not Horans team with very if any changes to it. The style of play is different with the sweeper but I don’t see a hole lot of different to the team Horan had.
Rochford record in Connaught is prob one of the worst we ever had no Connaught title since he took over.
Getting beat by Galway 3 yrs in a row as well.
Yes we got to allirelands but to do what he did to Clark on all Ireland final day is unforgivable in my eyes, how Clarke didn’t walk after that I’ll never no.

Hard to believe but there's going to be no club championship games until after the Pope's visit.

It seems more than likely Stephen Rochford will step down reading between the lines.

Not sure where he’s getting the idea that Mayo were everyone’s favorite other team - I’m sure like most counties they have their haters too. But it would have been good if he had had the cojones to actually name the All Ireland winning teams Mayo will be remembered more vividly than.

Well said. I really hope we have a proper crack at the league next year.

The days of peaking for August are gone imo. Connaught is getting more competitive. And we all know the qualifiers will really test you.

We should aim to win our province first and foremost and take the direct route. And then build momentum from there.
Hopefully the likes of Loftus, O'Donoghue, J Durcan....maybe one or two more... will get plenty of game time in the league next year, build up some form and confidence.
And then ease some of the more seasoned guys in a bit later. We need to be careful how we manage some of our "veterans".
If the likes of Andy and Boyle stay on, their role should really be as impact subs.

What was really telling on Saturday night was the lack of proven impact players we had on the bench (even allowing for our injuries).

I'm thinking of Tyrone in 2005 I believe it was - and the way they used Canavan sparingly - but to brilliant effect

Getting to be an awful man for the old hyperbole Sweeney.

The population of a county remember for generations the teams that won Sam.
Mayo in 50 & 51 for example.
They could not give a rats who else remembers.

All valid and I am not a huge fan of him from a youth progression point of view as well but his match ups were usually pretty good. Granted he made mistakes but I think you have to give him the respect and time to decide what he wants to do.

The problem is who is out there to replace him.

With the new Super 8 format, and the need for a strong bench with so many games coming so close together at the latter stages, Mayo would have been better off resting players who have been on the road so long and use the league to look to strengthen their bench and not give a toss about staying in Div 1.

Yup, that's exactly my point.
We're asking too much of the same "core" group of players in both championship and league - they're not getting any younger.....and the younger lads aren't developing.

The guys who are 30+ with miles on the clock don't need to play so regularly in the league.
Time to trust and try and develop some of the newer guys in the spring and spare the seasoned guys for the summer....if it doesn't work, so be it. But lets be brave and be open to change.

Mayo won't win Sam with the same old regulars.
They came very close over the years, but it's not gonna happen now.
I know that the likes of Boyle, Higgins, Moran, SOS etc. of course still have something to offer at county level, but maybe it's best to go big with youngsters in 2019 and rebuild around the U21 winning team.

Frankly, Mayo are a better team than Kildare, but when it came to dig deep in the injury time, Mayo came up short.

With regard to re-building next year, putting some players out to pasture, and so on, it's not as black and white an issue as some may think

If Rochford stays on (Unlikely I'd say), next year would almost certainly be his last, so if we're honest its hardly in his best interest to start re-building a team and I'm sure he'll try and convince this squad to go for one more season

If someone else comes in it really depends on their own 'job spec' so to speak and their own mentality also. They might only want to give it a lash for a season or 2, or be tasked with winning Connacht/challenging for an AI in year one, so again they could persist with this squad

It really depends who is in charge and what guidance is given really. I'm not convinced there'll be a whole lot of retirements just yet, but a new manager with fresh ideas may well not persist with some of the more senior players in his plans

That's not realistic though. Even to win Connacht, Galway are a younger team, the "old" Mayo team are unlikely to beat them in 2019. It's not like sticking with the same guys is a short-term passage to success
Rochford won no silverware in 3 seasons with these players.

I would very much doubt it.
From what he has said in the past, where GAA is concerned, he would have no interest in managing any team other than Donegal.

Something he has not ruled out returning to at some stage in the future.

He has been in the U.S. recently doing some work with an American football team faik and will complete his soccer coaching badges by the end of this year, which seems to be the career he is looking to follow at present.

Galway United job for Jim McGuinness.

Would bringing back Connelly/Holmes be an option if the players could put their differences behind them. Alot of C&H points about what Mayo require to win an All Ireland have proved true unfortunately.
