We all have times when the scales fall from our eyes and see the world as it truly is.

When we used to fully subscribe to some view only to now look back and cringe at it.

I feel as I get older, it's hard not to do this more and more.

When you take away the various incentives that humans have to delude themselves (like sex, money, power) you tend to see the world more as it is and not how you're expected to see it.

Now if you go too far down this road you end up going mad so some self-delusion is necessary. Maybe I'll leave that until I'm eighty.

But anyway, what stuff have you cast off as you move through life. What stuff do you look back on and say "well that thinking was horse**** and I lapped it up at the time..." and cringe badly at.

i'm sure everyone has gone through a nice, benign communism phase. i cringe when i think of some of the convictions i had and i'm not even 20 yet!

I don't cringe when I think about viewpoints I might have held when I was younger that have changed as I've got older because what difference does it make? I'll occasionally beat myself up about ****ty or embarrassing things I might have done when I was intoxicated when younger but changing viewpoints means I've kept educating myself on a topic and generally I'll try to be open enough that I can have my viewpoint changed by whatever new insight comes along.

Happened me a few years ago too, OP. Just seen the light. I was in this restaurant with my wife and I just looked around at everything and suddenly felt so disillusioned by it all and said to her "Is this what it's all about? Eating, drinking, fcuing, sucking? Snorting? Then what? You're 50. You got a bag for a belly. You got tits. You need a bra. They got hair on them. You got a liver, that got spots on it, and you're eating this fcukin shit, looking like these rich fcuking mummies in here" along also with a few other things about her that she didn't really appreciate and she gets up and storms off. Women, eh.

I've given up trying to please everyone, and instead try to please only myself, a select few friends and my family. And by please I mean not annoy. I'm pretty sure i'm in a mid-life crisis, but I not longer have the need to talk to people about the mundane things like who Mike rode at the weekend, the couple who are not monogamous, what x did to y, etc, etc. I'll chat all day with people who have shared interests, and have basically given up on involving myself in anything outside of this, because it's the same, boring conversations day in and day out.

But, when i'm passionate about something, I can talk all day and be the most sociable person you meet.

So, to answer your question OP, being social is something I look back on and wish I didn't spend so much time and effort doing, as it led nowhere really. Now I'm more focused on what makes me happy, and that's what I should have done from be beginning.
