Apostille Stamp for US Birth Cert

Hi all,

I am in a desperate panic. Getting married September 21st of this year and ive been told although I am an Irish citizen because I have a US birth cert I need to send my birth cert back to the US for an Apostille Stamp.

I need to do this in New Jersey but can't seem to find any clear information on how to go about this and the US embassy have not been very helpful.

Has anyone been through this process before? I will probably need to get it expedited.

My fiance was in the exact same position, Irish citizen but born in New Jersey. Getting the Apostille was a bit of a rigmarole to be honest with you!

It basically involved:
1. Filling out this form from the State of New Jersey website
2. Posting it to them, along with the long form birth cert, with a self addressed envelope - we were on holidays in the US so posted it while there to speed things up and for the self addressed envelope we bought a prepaid envelope while in the States and used Shipito.

The annoying part was they sent it back to us marked 'rejected' because they couldn't read the credit card number properly, fairly annoying! So had to do it all again but this time from Ireland and in a bit more of a hurry so we sent them the form ticking the 'expedited' service for $40 and this time had to include a prepaid envelope from UPS which cost about $100 ish I think (and took an awful lot of time to explain ti UPS what we needed!!). It came back fairly quickly after that.

Alternatively there's a few websites that offer to do it all for you but the fees were fairly extortionate.

Thanks so much for the advice! I printed the form off and sent it to a family friend in New Jersey who is willing to drive it down to Trenton. I paid for it to be expedited. Worried I didn't get them enough for the retun postage...just 35 dollars, but i supposed i don't need it till the beginning of September so won't be needing it to be overnighted!!

I wrote quite legibly, so i am hoping there wont be any issues. So stressful!!

For 40 dollars expedited i think they say they turn it around in 8.5 hours, but I am dubious.

If you are getting married in September do you not need your Apostille on your birth cert more than 3 months in advance for your intention to marry appointment?

No, I arrived in without an appointment there a few weeks ago because the wicklow office don't answer phones. The lady was kind enough to give us dates even without our official appointment. She gave me my official appointment for This tuesday and then my fiance and I have our couples interview in Naas at the beginning of September. She said it's ok if I don't have it for the meeting on Tuesday as long as I have it for the one in September.

I sent off for my Apostille Stamp, and it was rejected because apparently I didn't have the right kind of birth cert. So, now I have to send off for a copy of my birth cert first, have it posted back to me, THEN fill out Apostille forms and send it back again.

At this stage, I don't think we'll be able to be legally married on time. I'm not too too stressed about this because they did tell me in the registry office they will still allow us to get married, they just won't be able to go the legal stuff till all the paperwork comes back.

I'm trying to send off for my birth cert today and just ran into a stumbling block. How does it get sent back t me?? It doesn't say anything about sending a stamped envelope with my return address, but I am assuming thats the case. What will happen if I don't stamp it? How can I? I am not in the US! Will they just not send it back to me?

We applied for the birth cert using the online system on State of New Jersey's website and they just posted it back to us as far as I can remember, I.e. the fee we paid covered that?
