Probably time to open a new thread for the 2018 season?

Silly season is still in full swing as we all know with Williams and Sauber not having confirmed their line ups as yet.

What are people's opinions on the Halo and Alfa Romeo for 2018?

Grosjeans seat has to be on thin ice now. He has a proven fast car in the hands of Mag, but still has no points.

You would wonder, if he were to get the boot or leave, what effect that would have on the driver market. Could spice it up a bit.

Where would RG go ...Indy Car ?? or no mans land .

Not halfway yet so he has time in the next 2 races to show / earn something for the season . He was sixth in Austria last year a repeat of that would do him the world of good

Possibly Formula E eventually, that seems to be the safe haven for most now. I hope he doesn't of course, he has had a fair bit of bad luck in all of this.

Not likely. He is a former world champion, after all. Elderly F1 drivers either retire completely or move to a different category. I can't see him commentating for Sky!

Should Ferrari choose to promote Leclerc to replace Kimi, why would they bother putting an auld lad (in racing terms) in a race seat at Sauber when they have a young Italian waiting in the reserves.
Kimi goes, Leclerc to Ferrari and Giovinazzi to Sauber makes sense. None whatsoever in Kimi to Sauber

Given his performances this season he should be terrified of losing his seat. If I had to describe his season so far in one word, garbage.
Bad luck is one thing, but his teammate is doing the job with a car that is mostly able to fight for points. Grosjean is making too many mistakes, if he was a potential superstar it could be forgiven but he's not. Haas could easily do better than him

His temperament is suspect but he has great ability and is quick when it counts. He has demonstrated this with Lotus and last season with Haas. I really think he could do a great job for Ferrari. I rate him far superior to the likes of Perez, Hulkenburg, Bottas and Magnussen.

An F1 driver has to be consistent. Being fast for a lap or two, maybe pushing the car over the limit and crashing out a fair bit is hardly grade A material.

I couldn't agree, he's way too inconsistent and I would question whether he has the mental toughness to be a real contender. The others you list are all better drivers than he is. KMag is the best barometer and he's wiping the floor with Grosjean

He's doing a really solid job at Renault. Ok, so they can't ballast the car as well as with the little guys, but I'm beginning to see things are shaping up. Any slight improvement in that PU and they'll be in the mix with the others.

RB not opting to take the new MGU-K in Austria, so let's see what the Renault has to offer...

This is why I think Renault could be a big enough player in the driver market. Their car is really improving, and while not a top 3 team (yet), they are a works team and are playing catch up at a reasonable rate to the top teams.

IF...IF Ricciardo leaves RB, then he could easily a seat there, and RB can then pull Sainz back to fill in. OR, if Alonso wants out of McLaren, he would always go back there (this one is the joker in the pack though).

Silly season could get silly.

Of those 4 I'd rate Magnussen the lowest and even he's beating Grosjean.

If Grosjean did loose his seat . Who would Haas take . would it be a Ferrari development driver or are they free to choose .
They are consistant point score , probably should have more , Is it even attractive for any driver to go there . Really the best to hope for is 3rd in a chaos filled race , other than that its 6th-10th

They are still among the bottom teams (only ahead of Williams, majority of points scored by Leclerc) where drivers have to work hard for every point. Which is great for young hungry drivers and a bit less suitable for a driver who hasn't stretched himself in last 5 years. Kimi is a good driver, a very good driver when he is motivated but currently he is in F1 because he hasn't figured yet what else to do. I think drivers who want it more deserve a chance.

Leclerc or Giovanazzi, depending also on the carrier cockpit at Ferrari. I would really wonder when Grosjean keeps this form, that he would retain his cockpit.

Sauber are on an upward trajectory but you give the car more credit than it deserves. Leclerc is good enough to make it look easy

Said it before, but my word I'm delighted with Leclerc's F1 debut season so far.

4 top 10s in 8 races, and only twice has he finished further back than 13 place. I was lucky enough to see him last year twice in the F2 where he dominated, everyone believed he would go on and perform at F1.

Really hope he continues with this form and can get himself in one of the top cars sooner rather than later!

Honestly can't see how you can compare the McLaren Hamilton joined to the Sauber Leclerc has.

Hamilton was driving a McLaren that had finished in the top 3 constructors the previous two years prior to his arrival. With Kimi finishing 5th and 2nd as lead driver.

Leclerc joined a team who finished at the bottom 2 in the previous years. Can say all about the Sauber improvements made but nowhere near the level of competitiveness that McLaren was, even if it is blackened with the espionage accusations and subsequent DSQ.

Sauber are exceeding expectations and Leclerc is a big reason for that. He has been one of the most talented young drivers coming through and was smashing records on his journey to the F1.

Also on Rookie Drivers and best cars, if we take the first season they start as their rookie year (not joining half way or towards the end) then surely Ocon in that Force India would be best in recent times. A way more competitive car than the Sauber as of now.

I think F1 have been lucky with Rookies the last 2 years , Ocon was great last year and Pushed Perez the whole way . Lerclerc this year , and Gasly is in that group as well Making less than competitive cars look competitive is a real sign of talent .
