I know that. But if you've had a car in your forecourt for 4 months at that price and no-one has looked at it. You'll find a way to shift it yourself without a buyer.

I have experience of the k series engine and when the hg fails they end up a right mess with oil mixing through the water and the only way fix them is with an uprated hg and all the bits including new long bolts.

This is true, and I love a straight six, and I love E39s, but the problem with that car is it's a poverty spec 520i and it's a Touring, so it has little to no desirability at all. It would need to be an SE and a saloon as a bare minimum, preferably a Sport and I personally would prefer if it was a manual and a was a 525i.

Yes, it does have an engine that is fantastic in many ways, it's so smooth and you'd be revving the arse off it at times just for the noises it makes and how it will run up to the redline with no letup whatsoever, but there is a difference between revving the arse off a car because you're in the mood for it and having to do it all the time because it's not quick enough. This engine with the automatic gearbox is underpowered in a 3 series never mind a much heavier 5 series. You wouldn't believe the difference there is between the M54B22 and the M54B25, it feels like a lot more than the 21 bhp and 26 lb ft there is meant to be between these engines on paper. The 2.5 has a lot more go in it so it's much easier to live with when you just want to plod along but at the same time you can still use every single one its 189 bhp on public roads and have lots of fun with it without breaking any speed limits, it also uses no more fuel than the 2.2 so it's a much better choice.

Seat bolsters and the steering wheel wear out quite quickly in these cars compared to other makes, although that's still quite worn (mine has 121,000 miles and the leather is starting to crack but there's no tears or anything like that).

That's not the reason I wouldn't buy it though, the main reason not to buy that car is because of the rubbish four cylinder engine. That's not just simple cylinder snobbery because I own one of these with a six cylinder engine; the N42 engine fitted to that car is just pure muck from a reliability point of view.

As well as the usual oil leaks that petrol BMWs can suffer from (no big deal really), these engines have a reputation for problems with the timing chain, Valvetronic, head gaskets, valve steam seals and secondary air pump. If you want a four cylinder E46, the diesel is by far the best option, and it's faster than any of the four cylinder petrol options, too. Of course, the best engine for the E46 is the silky smooth straight six petrol:).

Mazda cx7 apart from the tax are very good cars. Handling is excellent for the car size and gear changes are quite precise and mechanical. Plenty of power from the 2.3 twin turbo at 256 bhp makes this a solid sleeper.

Also nice that they only came in one trim which is of very high standard, climate control, CD changer 6x, 9 Bose speakers, front heated seats, xenon lights etc.

Watch out for timing chain over 140k km and you've got a lot of car for the money!

I know its a biggish car but is 0-60 @ 8seconds seem slightly disappointing for 256bhp
