Mayo GAA Discussion - Part 3

Quite a bit of pessimism around here.

After flying out of the traps we turned over some amount of ball.

I found it bizarre that Ger Caff started ahead of Eoin O Donoghue who is an outstanding option and showed same when he was introduced.

Keith Higgins offers so much offensively but seems to give little thought to his defensive duties.He was never the tightest marker and doesn't enjoy too great a confinement to the menial duties that are the bread and butter of a back.:)He's too loose to sweep.

Boyler seemed to out of gas from the get go.

Seamie's injury looks bad,another terrible blow.

There seemed to be no rhyme nor reason to our defensive formation.Michael Quinlavin was so so impressive,too frequently left isolated inside one on one.

I saw the Tipp team coming in from the Thurles Sarsfield's car park,seriously imposing players.That lad in the middle of the park was very impressive.

I dissent on the general opinion re Cian Hanley,I thought he put in very good showing in the second half.

It was amazing such a fortuitous goal was the turning point but we did push on.Leeroy yet again was immense,ditto Aidan,Kevin Mc.When the chips were down these lads stood up.Our superior fitness was a telling factor.

Diarmuid is a serious option for midfield with his work rate as he has'nt been offering as much of a scoring threat in recent years.Doc put in a solid shift.Nice to see Conor Loftus nail that free.Maybe I was watching a different game but I did not think Cillian had such a bad outing.

We are in dire need of a free taker from the right side,unfortunately Evan Regan's cameo won't have augmented his confidence.

A soft draw would be ideal,enjoying the road trips.

Hopefully Donie and Brendan are edging closer to match fitness.

Tom Parsons is a big blow alright but now's the time to try something different. Thought Leeroy done fine in there today. I'd like to see him and Diarmuid midfield the next game.

I thought Lee was very good today most especially when it looked like the game was going against us.

I'd like to see Leeroy and Diarmuid in the middle the next day against Leitrim.:)

They'll do fine in there, Aidan, Kev Mc and DOC supporting them too

It's amazing who you meet in far away lands, but I actually bumped into someone from Mayo yesterday who told me the prognosis on Brendan is not good unfortunately.

I'm less concerned about the loss of Seamie than I am about the loss of Tom. Obviously we're missing Seamie's physicality in the middle now but I think the loss of mobility is more concerning. Midfielders need an engine these days, which is why Diarmuid O'Connor might be suited for the role. He runs all day and I thought his fielding was pretty good yesterday. Aidan is still far and away our best fielder so I think rotating him in and out of midfield is the best option as he doesn't have the gas to carry the midfield role all match. Who to put in the middle with Diarmuid, I'm not sure. Lee plays midfield with his club but I still think he's better running from the half back line. Don't know what the story is with Donie, but I also think he's better defensively. Stephen Coen, I'm afraid, is a little out of his depth at this level, so I'm not sure if he's an option either. So it's a bit of a head scratcher to see who can fulfill that role.

I think the ters 'a safe pair of hands' and ' safe pair hands' applies to Seamie. That calming influence that they both brought has been ripped from the team now but have to to say that Aido was excellent yesterday. Not looking to be the hero but stepped into the breach and did the dirty work, some amount of covering.

Yes he didn't contribute as much from open play yday (way too deep ) but frees count as well .....

Without my old sources to watch the game back.

Am I being overly critical but I know it was a seriously good ball in but I thought it was a very poor goal to concede?

David Clarke should have cleaned ball and man out.

In my opinion, if the goalie is going to be coming out like that, he better be sure the ball is gone and the man is left on the deck. A bad fumble tbh.

Massive turning point and stroke of luck with the goal yesterday but we rallied well to the finish by.
Fitness was well ahead of Tipp which is good to see especially as these unfortunate injuries are piling up. Top all round performance from AOS. McLoughlin pure class

It's like deja Vu all over again.

I only saw from about the Boyle black card to just before the Durkan goal.
The part of the game that Mayo were poor.

I just can't ready anything into this team. The S.O'S injury is a worry because now both starting midfielders are gone.

People are suggesting the younger OConnor brother fit in there, will that work.

Yeah, awful one to concede. A carbon copy of Brogan's goal in the 2013 final, with Hennelly finding himself in no man's land that time. In fairness it was very uncharacteristic of Clarke, but again there were a few silly first half kickouts. He did make a great save from Quinlivan

I think we can expect a lot of long kickouts from the opposition and high balls into our full back line next week. For some reason we really struggled with the high bounces from the hard ground.

I just think the defence seems less confident without Harrison. I think we will struggle going forward without him.

Banana skin over and done with. I thought it was over and done with midway in the second half.

Tipp look a great team, they remind me of Mayo, when they started this run of AI appearances. Fast ball, flowing, great to watch. If they get their fitness up, they could be a serious serious outfit.

You could probably get away with yourself and yop at 8 and 9 the next day !

I was confined to the radio for the games yesterday but I would agree that DOC would be a good option at midfield. I'd never thought of it before, it might improve him as a player too.

He's has the engine and build for it. Might be worth a point or two in a game.

Later on though if that all worked out he'd be up against some of the best players around and he'd have a lot more responsibility. He has not been a player that has required the opposition's best marker in that past. Being up against the likes of D Moran and Fenton would be a big step, unlike Keegan who has stepped up to numerous challenges.

A run in the half back line might bring him along too. He could pop into midfield, develop a feel for it.

Agreed with Higgins his footballing skills have been masking the fact that he's not a tight defender for a few years now. Also with everyone fit you wouldn't have him at corner back either. Maybe try him at HF again, exchange him with DOC.

We really struggled at midfield when SOS went off until the Durcan goal. In fairness everything changed when that went in, but the last 10/15 minutes may be papering over a few cracks

Or maybe not, if last year taught us anything its not to write off this side. The draw tomorrow will be massive though. You'd have to think Monaghan and Tyrone are back on the horse at this point

I think we will have a lot of trouble going forward against better teams as a result of these injuries. We don't have the squad depth to cope with any more and we will be plugging a lot of holes all over the field. Losing Parsons, O'Shea and possibly Harrison for the season will be very difficult to overcome. I think we are probably on borrowed time tbh.

If Vaughan and Barry Moran couldn't even bench either, surely they're both well off match fitness aswell. That's some amount of bad luck. Even the Dubs would struggle hugely without guys like Fenton, McCarthy, Flynn, McAuley

It was a bit sobering watching Kerry tear apart Cork straight afterwards. Expecting to get up to that level in a few weeks seems a massive ask altogether for us.

Only for that lucky goal I think we were in for a right nervy last 10 minutes. We were being extremely over-ran at that point and it came completely against the run of play.

I wonder is Andy Moran fully fit? He made some very uncharacteristic strange decisions at times on the ball

The lucky goal certainly sparked Mayo into life but the sheer fitness and conditioning of that Mayo team was to the core in the last 20 mins. Round 3 only Monaghan,Tyrone would be troublesome. Mayo would beat Kildare,Cavan by more than they beat Tipp yesterday as both are poor defensively. Armagh aren't up to much either a middle of the road side now while Clare,Offaly,Leitrim are going no further unless they draw each other.

It’s a tricky game for Mayo certainly no guarantee

Kildare very unprectibable. You’d be surprised. If Mayo are as loose as they where Saturday, it will be close.
