Imo the people portrayed in them are the exact people who they are targeting, they normally don't put a massive amount of thought into buying or owning a car, they buy the same car or brand of car every few years because again they just turn the key and drive off, no more thought or hassle. Wash, rinse and repeat every few years. The thing is that over the last 10 years or so these sheep were steered into buying diesels when they really didn't need them. Now that Toyota are forced to retire their diesel car range due to external factors earlier than they would like, they were frightened that the sheep would flock to another brand who still sells diesel cars. Hence the Toyota PR machine came up a great idea of telling people that they are pioneering no longer selling petrol cars and a hybrid is the best thing for them rather than buying a product from their rivals.
