More of a reader than poster these days, but have an odd error with my car that gives me a headache...

05 volvo s40, Park assist service required message was on for months. Couple of weeks ago the boot refused to be opened and the park assist started working.

Any ideas what's going on? The wiring I guess?

Checked Google and YouTube, no joy...

My sensors in my 06 S60 are dodgy too. I think the module to control the PDC is in the radio unit.

New clutch and dmf yesterday being fitted. Mechanic ran into an issue then where the clutch pedal wasn't behaving as it should. Hopefully be sorted today.

Was your DMF gone? They really shouldn't need to be replaced when it's a silky smooth straight six petrol.

Speaking of BMW, I saw an X2 today for the first time, have to admit it looks really well (I still don't like it because it's got wrong wheel drive as standard and doesn't have any six cylinder engines available for those who think I've lost my marbles).

S80 same, two rear sensors dead.

Also my washer fluid bottle is a seive

Yeah dmf was gone. Unless you gave the car some revs when pulling away it would shudder and vibrate. All silky again now thankfully.

I would rather have a boot opening than the park assist.

When I manage to get it opened I will look into the wiring, wouldn't mind fixing two things at one go.

I'd a 2008 S40 with a boot that wouldn't open either though had no issues with PDC. The wiring to the boot release has a design flaw that causes it to rip and eventually tear and stop working, bought a replacement online for around €60. Absolute pain in the ass switching it, had to put down the seats and crawl in and pry out all the trim to get at that the wiring loom. then more prying to get it out. Only took about an hour in all honesty but felt like much longer. Was a roasting hot day so i was melting in the back of the boot. Simple enough job but one for a cool August evening i think!

I did try to get inside today, but it was hot indeed. Spent few minutes trying to move the cables a bit hoping I will get it opened, but gave up. Will try again next week, pain in the **** this is, but has to be done at some stage. Have an amp and a guitar to drive with tomorrow in the back seats

The starter on the ST packed it in today it looks like! Left it at garage to get sorted next week. Bad timing I was going to take it to Ford show in morning bit of a pain.

Anybody bought spurious BMW centre caps? I have new alloys being fitted in the coming days and may as well replace the caps while I am at it but at nearly €10 a pop even with trade discount I am slow to shell it out. Wondering are the spurious/chinese special ones any good?

The chinese ones will fade, crack, blotch etc. For the sake of it I would always go OEM with those.

Just back from a week in France. Rented the cheapest car I could for the trip and was hoping for something French, a Twingo or similar but got a dire Grande Punto. Weird spec, everything was bottom of the barrel except it had bluetooth and navigation. And it was a 1.2 petrol, a really wheezy thing, you had rev the arse off it to get anywhere. Much preferred the ugly Fiat 500L 1.3 diesel I had on my holiday last year! We flew into Bordeaux and were staying in an apartment about 2 hours drive east in Sarlat. There were some fantastic driving roads around, it was all quite Irish in a lot of ways. It was lush and green around, and the roads were tights and twisty which was a bit of craic.

Got back in last night and was out for a drive in the e46, the clutch is so heavy in it compared to the Fiat. Stalled it immediately, you'd think I'd be used to it by now! But glad to have some oomph!

Just used my first tank of fuel since getting the brakes sorted and I'm fairly impressed, I know the warm weather may be helping but I think that's my best tank to date. The dash says 6.2 l/100km but 628kms for 38 litres works out at almost 6.0 l/100kms exactly and that was driving without any real caution. For the last 6 months or more the best I had been seeing was around 6.7-6.8 l/100km over a tank or approx 540-550kms max before needing to fill up so there's a fair difference there*.
