My favourite albums of 2018 so far. Listened to an awful lot of rubbish as well but these are the ones that made lasting impressions.

1)Typhoon- Offerings
2)First Aid Kit-Ruins
3)Just Mustard-Wednesday
4)Lebanon Hanover-Let them be Alien
5)Shame -Songs of Praise

Been a very disappointing year so far for me. Lots of really underwhelming albums. Anyway, here's what I've really liked;
1. 'There's a Riot Going On' - Yo La Tengo
2. 'Singularity' - Jon Hopkins
3. '7' - Beach House
4. 'In the Rainbow Rain' - Okkervil River (This, too, is patchy)

And that's about it. Tried to get my head around bands with a buzz - including Shame - but it ain't happening. MGMT album was poor, Buffalo Tom pretty average, new Low Anthem underwhelmed.

Another vote for Parquet Courts. The more I listen to it to the better it gets. It's probably their strongest release yet, even though I really thought their previous album had some great songs too.

Obviously, they sound a lot like their influences - really strongly like The Minutemen to my ears at times - but they write sturdy and strong songs and I think they've got something unique sounding going on in general.

Anna von Hausswolff - Dead Magic
A.A.L. (Against All Logic) - 2012-2017

I'm hoping the next half of the year will throw up some better releases.

New 'Oneohtrix Point Never' LP 'Age Of' is a huge recommendation from me. I pre-ordered the vinyl April just gone from the Bleep store with the lovely t-shirt bundle and they sent it monday and it arrived this morning, its officially out this Friday. This is a fantastic modern forward pushing and also accessible alt/pop record and will transport you out of this world for over 40 brilliant minutes.

Tracks like 'Toys 2', 'We'll Take it', it's all just so absolutely brilliant. The end of 'Toys 2' would have you in near nostalgic tears, with the punctuating emotional synthy stab hits, then you have 'We'll Take it' a track that sounds like the national anthem for Predator drones written by one of the murderous computer killing machines whose also very good at music.

Really really really good. Great album to lose yourself over the forthcoming holiday weekend what with the good weather and everything. I'm already lost in it.

So good mosstin, I might have to buy a second copy I have the arse nearly burnt out of this already. CD comes with a lovely booklet too and great artwork. Physical copies are well worth the purchase for this.

Dunno about that. Oneohtrix Point Never has gone far enough already. When you let the actual music do the talking, then doesn't really matter what you call yourself or your band. I think that may be the whole reason behind the name. It's just a fantastic record. Give it a blast, see what you think.

I know the Paraqet Courts record is getting good reviews but I cannot warm to it..well actually havent listened to it ..only a few singles.Their early music was brilliant but I cannot find any redeeming qualities in a song like wide awake.

Re : Oneohtrix Point Never's 'Age Of', this is still just getting better and better for me. There are layers and moments I keep discovering while listening to this. I can't stop listening to 'Same', and that did nothing for me on the first few listens. There is a part on that track halfway through, where it just takes off with a total woooomph. It harkens me back to the best moments from Tears for Fears or Depeche Mode 80's memories. Somebody added it to this electro track on youtubes which is great.

Course it won't be for everybody, but I love it, and I must check out that Bon Ivor LP too after what said here.

Another great record just out which really mirrors this is 'James Ferraro' - "Four Pieces for Mirai"
If you are into OPN like me, definitely check out that new record too. Great great stuff

It's not epoch defining brilliant or anything but I like it a lot. Though I can understand if people like their guitar rock more knotty and noisy - and there's nothing wrong with that - then the latter day sound of the band may not necessarily hold a lot of appeal.

Good to see a bit of debate. Almost reminds of the days when Boards was semi-alive!

That is exactly the album it's put me in mind of - completely right. Wasn't a great fan of it either but I'm definitely willing to let the Oneoh work its magic on me.
