Anyone else the outcast of their group of friends?

Pretty much the only friends I have are a group of lads I went to school with. They are great guys but i have always felt the odd one out. The older I get the more I feel this. Our interests, sense of humour, outlooks on life etc are all way out of synch.

Out of the six there is only I really connect with and I hardly see him these days. It seems as we get older and older I'll gradually be edged out of the group. On one hand I sort of accept this as I'm drawn to people like Charles Bukowski who were loners and didn't have much need for other people. On the other hand it's a bit sad not to be part of the gang.

Maybe I have some personality disorder that makes me like this. Anyone else feel the same?

I guessing that the difference with you is that you had no problem forming and maintaining relationships with a new circle of friends and acquaintances?

Actually that couldn't be further from the truth but you know what i would rather not hang around with people who just use you for when they need you true friendship unfortunately is very hard to come by someone who has your back no matter someone you can completely trust and confide in I've never had that kind of friendship with anyone.

Well, if you find it sad not to be part of the gang, then you clearly do need other people. So maybe consider ditching the Charles Bukowski, loner aesthetic and find ways of becoming more open around people. Because as John Donne (who was better than Bukowski) said, no man is an island. I know Paul Simon disagreed, but he openly admits to being still crazy (even after all these years, which is ridiculous). Sorry, what was the topic again? It's late and I should be in bed.

I'm a 42 year old man and my best (to be honest only) friend is a 67 year old Scottish woman who lives here. On the surface we don't have that much in common but we get along great.

My advice would be to not overlook anyone as a potential friend.

OP , Irish society can tend to be very cliquey. Thus, when a circle of friends disintegrates, like yours, you simply will have to branch out. Irish Guitarist last sentence is the operative for you here!

At that age, people are getting married, settling down etc, and its quite common I would think for a circle of friends to change a lot and drift apart at that stage.

People are getting more confident as well, and given their spare time is precious, will spend it with those they value.

Agree with Irish Guitarist, great outlook to have.

Very few school groups remain close friends into adulthood. People's lives change, their interests change, they move away, meet new people etc. It's not being an 'outcast' it's just a natural moving on in life.

Obviously it's nice if a group that were really close at school, retain that tight group friendship all through life. But it's very rare.

I'm a total outcast. I don't drink , smoke, party, take drugs, eat out, involve myself in any social activities or generally do anything outside of what I enjoy myself. In Ireland that's the equivalent of being invisible

I have friends...we just never spend any time together anymore...it's part of growing up imo. You'll get an odd conversation here and there but generally people's lives are not filled with free time once they get older. And how they spend it varies greatly.

My leisure time is spent reading, researching, exercising, meditating and spending time with my immediate family and partner (visiting places etc)
