Nothing banning it in the constitution, so the government could legislate for it in the morning if they wanted to.

Thread discussing it on here and a good few of the no abortion side posters on Here are in favour of it for some reason. Might be an age thing where they see that it could be something that will benefit them as they claim to be in their fifties.

Even if all they wanted was abortion in more cases than the very few, like the mortal peril of the mother, they wouldve repealed though. Now, it doesn't matter what they want does it, unless they are going to petition their TDs about it, as isn't it the Legislature that will determine what regulations for termination of pregnancies come forth?

For a 28 year old you talk a lot of crap about your own generation and the one after you.
In relation to the generation after you and I'd be one of them, we voted based on the headings of the purposed legislation and we are old enough to know what the pro life crowd are like. In relation to my dads generation who voted yes, in his words he's old and wise enough to know that the pro life crowd are generally arseholes who are a remnant of the type of people who tried to mess his life up because his own dad decided he didn't want to stick around which in 50s Ireland meant his mum having to fight the local penguin from having him put into "care". It was only after he started working and met guys who had been in Artane and similar places that he realised how lucky he was that his mun and gran, a woman far ahead of her time fought so hard for him.

The pro life which is one of the greatest oxymorons ever imaginary remit is done here, it's is done, they will fight it and will most likely use violence against people, similar enough to what has happened in the U.k but hopefully not like some cases in the US, but that will just show them in their true colours even more.

Purves Grundy is a name of a character from Brass Eye. I find it kinda weird to be hearing someone who likes Chris Morris to be viewing repeal as Ireland "losing some of its values" and to be pedalling reactionary hyperbole about future euthanasia legislation.

I guess his shows probably do attract some people nowhere near in sync with his worldview though, so that's on me.

I still can't believe it. I can't believe I didn't dream it all. I can't believe the 66.4% vote in favour of repealing, what a result! I didn't think the result would be that strong, I thought it would be much closer. I suppose that was caused by years of hearing about the prolife side's large numbers and great support and all that nonsense. The church also continues to have such a stranglehold on Irish society that I really thought they would swing this somehow.

Anyway, we did it. We repealed the 8th. Can you believe it?
I have 4 prochoice badges on my backpack, 2 of them have been there for nearly 3 years. 3 years ago, this was just a dream. 35 years ago, this was just a dream. I feel so proud of Ireland. First SSM and now this, in such a short space of time. When we put our minds to something, anything can be done.

There hasn't. Your problem is there is a noticeable lack of people that agree with you.

I was back in university at the age of 40 a little back. So the girls wear more make up that I did when I wenf the first time. But essentially, the youth aren't that different in outlook. They are still full of conviction that anytjing is possible.

I was a university student while you were a newborn to toddler. Your view of the 1990s is distinctly romantic.

Most toxic? It really wasn't. The No side were largely ignored (as has been proven by the result). THe divorce, the original 8th ref, were far more toxic.

Not sure why you think the yes side were as you describe. I thought, in the main, that like in the equality ref their campaign was mainly positive and about making a positive difference.

The No side always were on a difficult task. They essentially wanted everything to the stay the way it was, and there is simply so many examples of peoples stories that show that staying the same simply wasn't a viable option. So they needed to stay away from reality and instead focus on peoples beliefs. That is a hard place to argue from as basically it comes to "I don't like it/believe it".

Hate to break it to you, but at 28, you are the youth (well to me and others anyway).

Back to the election result, I am genuinely but pleasantly surprised at the final outcome. I had thought Yes would win but with a margin of ~55-45%. And when you look at the demographics, it was a clear yes in all bands except the over 65s. So while some posters may give out about youth, it’s clear that this was a broad result, endorsed across most of the population.

I grew up in the 80s, in very rural, very Catholic Ireland. My home constituency is traditionally one of the most conservative in the country (Cork North West), and even there this referendum passed. Again, I am surprised at that, but happy.

Well done to all those who campaigned hard for this result, it’s been 35 years in the coming. And well done to the hard-working campaigners on the other side too.

Thank god this is over and done now and hopefully those disgusting posters at the schools come down quickly and should never being allowed to be put up at national schools. My mother who is 82 summed up the whole thing yesterday by stating she voted yes for her gran daughters and her Great gran daughters for their choice to choose and nobody should stop this right of the woman.
