Not this shot again. Hook was thrown under a bus because he went on a ramble that the victim was partly responsible for her rape. I don't think he should be fired but his comments were wrong. Ciara Kelly never said all men are terrible but last 12 months is proving to be great example how prevalent the violence against women is and how often men doing it are not stopped. Nobody said to Weinstein that is not ok , they just paid off the victims.

I could go on but I've just found out my father is in ICU in Galway (which is on the other side of the country to where I live) so I can't ,but I'd be interested in your thoughts on the above. If you could avoid personal comments and insults (as I have in my dealings with you) I would appreciate that.

tbh, all the media have been shameful when covering the two murders. Marion Finucane had already concluded by the weekend that Internet porn was at fault for the murder of the fourteen year old girl. Amazing that a woman who brings so little knowledge to most topics these days can offer such concrete advice on anything. And on Monday morning, Pat Kenny was speaking to Nicola Tallant. Both of them salivating about the prospect of him having murdered some of the other women who went missing. They went through the missing women one by one, saying "well he was too young for that, but he could have done that that and that". Ridiculous and irresponsible.

I didn't expect Kelly to handle it any better. Her agenda is to portray women as oppressed and all men as bast*rds, in spite of all of the things that this supposed oppressing Irish society has afforded her (funding her education as a doctor, and offering her the opportunity to become a radio presenter with no experience or talent). But it's not just her. If you look at the contrast of the handling of how Paddy Jackson was treated in the media after he was found innocent, as opposed to the eulogy that Liveline gave for Catherine Nevin even though she was found guilty of murdering her husband.

I’m not sure how you can suggest the poster is angry from his post to be fair.

The eulogy referred to was by Joe Duffy on Liveline. It was widely criticised in the radio thread and questioned re. its appropriateness in some media outlets at the time. For various reasons I can’t post a link now, but if you google the date of her death and then check the podcast section of the show on that day (or perhaps the following day) on the show’s page on the RTÉ website it’s there.

As for your suggestion that the opportunity to become a doctor is open to everyone, that is idealistic and naive and just not true. As someone involved in 3rd level education there are many, many obstacles to entry - this is hardly a new topic and has been discussed frequently on the airwaves. Access to third level education has never been equal in this country, and the gap is according to some academics, widening. Again, google will help you source information on this.

There's more to hosting a talk show than just a journalism degree. Pat Kenny, Sean Moncrieff, Ivan Yates and Tom Dunne are probably Newstalks heavyweights. None of them have a journalism degree.

Well I actually gave my opinion about her show and where I disagree with her in a post I think you thanked so I must assume you read it. Re-read it and let me know if you still need answers to those questions. My criticism was about hysterics that continued here, I might not agree with her opinion but she doesn't have some man hating agenda. But agenda or no agenda it is absolutely ridiculous to pretend the violence against women is not an issue and that it is not perpetrated mostly by men. It is often enabled because others, men and women, say nothing and that will have to change.

I must say I find it amusing that Ivan Yates made similar points to Ciara Kelly about safety and there is not one post about him playing to the gallery or scaremongering. Of course there is a chance that contributors in this thread are all just Ciara Kelly fans and would not listen to Ivan Yates or maybe Ivan Yates is wrong gender to offend sensibilities of some posters in this thread.

Interesting that you ignore the comments on where to look for the information you ask.

Anyway, I didn’t imply anything re. medical degree. You’re really stretching there. I’m not saying she didn’t have to do the work or study for it - of course she did. I’m really strugggling to see how you can say I was implying what you said, as I said nothing of the sort.

As for the “Newstalk heavyweights” as you dub then, all (bar Yates) had been on tv and/or radio as presenters/hosts (rather than experts or contributors) for years or indeed decades I’m some cases before they got their Newstalk gig. Even Yates did years with Chris Donoghue before being given a show on his own.

Re. Ryan and Byrne - I’ve been criticising the cronyism and nepotism within RTÉ for years, with specific reference to Ryan. If you look in my post history you’ll see this for yourself.

I have frequently posted that the worst presenter on Newstalk is Paul Williams, not Kelly. But that’s ignored. Yates, while good on breakfast with a grounded anchor in the past, has become a buffoon since been given the desk on his own. Now if I say the 3 worst presenters on Newstalk are Williams, Yates, and Kelly for the reasons that they are all tabloid in style and substance, will you still (as is the norm it appears in this thread) refuse to hear any criticism of Kelly because as she so eloquently told us on day 1 of her show she is a woman?

The person I’ve been most critical of on Irish Radio and for years has been Joe Duffy, is a man. And I’ve gone so far as to write numeeous complaints to the BAI and RTÉ about him, his presenting style, his “advice”, his handling of topics that are far outside his area of expertise, his rudeness, his lack of professionalism etc.
At least 95% of my posts on the radio thread (over 20,000) are about Duffy. It’s likely closer to 99% tbh.

The defence for Kelly can’t always be a cry of sexism. If I were just criticising her, you may have a point. But I don’t do that.

I answered about the opening before. But if you want specific answers you can't later on post exactly with what statement she was 'playing to the gallery', where she was self promoting and so on. If you want specific answers ask specific questions. But you can't demand specific answers and not offer what precisely I have to answer to.

In fairness it was me who mentioned sexist component to C. Kelly criticism. I actually didn't mean ButtersSukki who I think just likes listening to shows that make his/hers blood boil regardless of the gender of presenter.

But half of complaints in this thread will start with she shafted Hook and continue with she hates men. Some other presenter making the same point and there won't be a peep.

That’s absolutely not what I said (again).

I never said I hate Liveline. I listen as the host unintentionally provides comedy gold. It’s Alan Partridge-esque.

I don’t listen to shows I don’t like (Williams, Yates, Kelly). I caught a few minutes of yesterday’s show and then listened back to the entire show so that I could be prepared to engage in a debate on the contents of said show.

And I said barriers to entry about 3rd level education in general, not specifically the medical profession. These are largely socio-economic, but there are other factors. But if that’s strawman territory for you, I really don’t know what to say to you. It’s well established, but feel free to debunk it. As you’re so keen on asking for links yourself, perhaps you could show me evidence of your opinion?
