Probably time to open a new thread for the 2018 season?

Silly season is still in full swing as we all know with Williams and Sauber not having confirmed their line ups as yet.

What are people's opinions on the Halo and Alfa Romeo for 2018?

Bundle comes from a car dealing family so probably a few quid behind him to start with.
Was surely a millionaire when retiring from f1 driving. He has since had more than 20 years as a pundit where he also doubled up as dc manager.
He would have made a few million on dc no doubt. Would have been seriously well paid with BBC and no doubt gone through the roof with sky.
add in a few wise investments and he could easily have Gathered the reported figure.

The FIA has given the okay for teams to mount rearview mirrors on the halo instead of the chassis.

Not to be a pedantic worrier here, but surely if something were to hit the halo, like a wheel lets say, the driver could still be hit by the mirror detaching from the halo? Does that not negate the idea?

The same thing could happen now. Something could hit the mirror and the mirror could detatch.
If anything it’s an argument against detatchable mirrors.

I imagine the mirrors being slightly higher will give drivers slightly more perspective on what’s behind them. But ultimately the teams will be trying to get the maximum aero advantage instead of maximising rear view. Just like they do now.

It's strange with all the advanced in tech that the drivers don't have digital displays on the inside of their visors. Could easily work in a "rear view mirror" screen and do away with mirrors altogether.

Using "screens" instead of mirrors is literally overcomplicating bread, something hipsters and millionaires want as a gadget on road vehicles but which makes no sense in a racecar: the whole additional equipment that'd be required to make them work weighs more and costs more than two slabs of treated glass, plus adds yet another "point of failure" in the car.

The current F1 mirrors are quite fit for the use - look up any of the "in helmet cam" clips to verify yourself. I've driven road cars with way worse mirrors.

As for the halo-mounted thing, I guess it does make sense - but it certainly doesn't help, as they'll most likely resemble those "cocker ears" style mirrors on coaches.

They're common enough in GT racing as far as I know.

Williams tried a HUD idea before, but I think the issue now is weight. The HUD they use in a fighter jet for example is quite heavy. I also can't imagine the FIA would be happy with something else obscuring the drivers eyes as well.

I would love to see it though. There was a motorcycle helmet company that had a concept like that...turns out their startup was just to get money to buy Lambos and then disappear, it was called Skully I believe.

Apparently the interviews in Parc Ferme is here to stay. I don't like it, it kind of lessens the experience for fans at the track. Imagine if Ferrari win at Monza and they can't address the tifosi. Stupid move.

Good to see all 10 teams and 18 drivers with points already. Apart from Mercedes/Ferrari and then Red Bull, everybody else looks closely matched. Sauber and Williams looked better this weekend which was good to see. Force India also had good pace.

Considering McLaren are overhauling their design department it is probably obvious it was not just Honda. Honda were probably main problem and they probably resolved a lot of issues with time but their collaboration with McLaren didn't work and I would say it's at least partly due to McLaren arrogance. Red Bull are not much better though, their whinging about engines makes them less than ideal customer.

But at the moment, Honda don't seem to be a great step forward, aside from Bahrain, Toro Rosso are pretty much where McLaren were last year. Danny will want to start his own formal talks with another team soon but neither Sebastian Vettel or Lewis Hamilton will want a teammate like him stealing points here, there and everywhere.

Can't say I agree with that one. Alonso has already surpassed his points tally from last year after 4 races. Honda are already a unit down with TR, McLaren are still on their first unit.

Its McLarens first year with the unit, which they also switched to very late in the design stage of their car.

Saying the woes of the past few years were a McLaren issue when it was the Honda blowing up, breaking down, leaving, losing power (if you saw the Amazon doc, you would see the issues they had from the very first test), I think thats a bit wide of the mark.

RB also have to get a new supplier anyway, Renault have already said they wont be supplying them, and seeing as there is no hope of Ferrari or Merc giving them a unit, they have no choice really.

Honda are improving, but they are probably where they should have been about 3 years ago.
