They ought to be designed to withstand harsh treatment and neglected servicing. There are many engines out there that will have are robust enough to withstand an amount of abuse and neglect that is representative of real world driving. No everyone is OCD about a service booklet. The 1.6 cannot do that, it has to be treated with kid gloves. Therefore it is a soft engine and this lack of robustness means it is not as good an engine as, say, a HDI or a DCi which have a tremendous capacity to absorb abusing treament and neglected servicing. I happen to have have an Almera that's driven hard and has not had an oil change in nearly 3 years and it doesn't complain. Try that with the focus engine and see how far you get.

Engine cuts out and had no power in high revs.engine malfunction comes up on dash but still drives.when you turn off and turn on again it goes away for a while. Thinking blocked fuel filter?egr valve or something with turbo maybe

A 2005 Focus with 180,000 miles left our fleet some time back with everything original and I believe has passed the 200K mark since. It was well looked after....
