Thought i would have a few U grades on the batch but ended up with a mixture of R+ and R=, FS all in 3 range. Weights just about OK. by the time i replace them there will be f*** all left to play with...

The price i pay for these are controlled to certain extent by factory prices. sometimes i can pick up replacements at < 1000 if factory prices are low. other times i could go to 1150 if factory prices are high.
Bass Reeves wrote: » The cattle that you killed early in the week averages shy of 1600 euro at a guess. To maintain your margin you need to buy sub 1000. As well I imagine that they were finished on silage and ration. I imagine that an average winter costs you over 300/head to finish. I cannot see a net margin of 200/head in them. It is interesting that I saw Adam Woods in the beef section on the back pages reccommending to lads to finishing forward stores out of the shed in June on adlib ration. Not sure which planet he is on with ration prices going up. But then again Teagasc and the Journal are always pushing production at any cost. But with cattle in 6 months and on ration to some extend it is hard to see thrive in this situation and cost's hitting over 3 euro/head/day. If lads follow this advice and too many do it you could see a price fall in early June. You would want you straw and silage already in there I imagine a decent ration will cost at least 240/ton and a nut more. Hard to see any margin in that game. He is trying to solve one issue ( possible shortage of silage) by adding huge cost into a fragile system. My advice is finish outside in July/Aug and reduce numbers for next winter.
gerryirl wrote: » I have to agree with you on that one..I picked out a few heavy stores last back end to have finished early. I like many other were hoping to have them on grass a month ago but there not. Im giving them a fair shot of meal and there no where near ready. When they get grass theyll fly it but Id not like to at it till june thats for sure. You'd be robbed. Im giving them a nut its 300 a tonne
