Do you turn off the tv when visitors call

When we visit a friend the tv is always on at full volume. it makes no difference what is on should it be cartoons or the news, our host sits glued to it. He is normally very chatty when there is no tv around.
When he comes to us the tv is turned off

but I know them to well They always invite us we would not call unannounced

Yes. People having TV on when you're trying to talk to them is maddening and rude. They should give their full attention to the real people in their company. I show the same courtesy to my guests.

If I left the TV on while guests in the room it would be a very clear and deliberate statement of "I'm not interested in you and you should go away as soon as possible"

That is, not counting house-guests who may wish to watch TV!

When people call of course the telly should be turned off ...after all if it is not it is like going out to dinner with friends and spending the time with your face stuck in your phone !

No TV in this house, so that's easy.
If we visit, it depends. Late Late toy show and we bring a feast, or Grand Slam Saturday and I bring some wine, it's fairly obvious. If hosts are watching something, join in or stay in the kitchen, or leave and come back some other time. It's their house, leave or join in.

Really, really hated it when people would call to see my parents when I was a kid and the TV had to be turned off. Hated it! Years later when I was a student I remember someone calling to a friends house and them being frustrated that the TV wasn't turned off. I smirked and thought 'fair faking play'.
But nowadays with simple options to pause and record, surely it is no longer a sacrifice to turn it off?

When we were kids we stole the local holy Joe's remote and used to stick on the German channels from outside the window when he and his wife were sitting in.

I generally turn it off, however there is one 'guest' who usually calls unannounced. At first we turned it off out of manners but our guest would bore ya to tears so now we just leave it on. Problem solved? Not a fcukin hope they just tend to waffle on while we're trying to watch something.

In general I would turn it off, unless I had something on Youtube that I wanted to show them etc. or if there was something we both intended to watch.

I don't mind when you visit someone and they stay watching something important to them, for instance a sports match that is live.

I hate it though when you visit someone and they just leave the TV on in the background even though no one is watching it. I'm a little hard of hearing sometimes so it can really affect my ability to participate in conversation, and it is just so irritating to have this stupid background chatter when no one is paying attention to it.

If you turn it down, why not turn it off? I have a hearing difficulty in that I can barely hear what is in my direct earshot if background nose is present.

No, always leave it on especially if I'm following a sporting event etc. I wouldn't have it up really loud or anything though but enough to hear it. Tv is on pretty much from the minute we get in from work until going to bed around 12. Weekends is on from when I get up until when I go to bed (if I'm in the house all day). Usually with one match after another on, so no way am turning it off just because someone calls.

In fact I'd find it quite awkward sitting ther with people and nothing on in the background etc.

Yes always turn if off. If they don't see the flickering light on the curtain and can't hear it, they assume I'm out and go away. Win win!
