I work for a tech company and everyone works like dogs. Thats just the way it is.

And if you were to take umbrage at details like your line manager calling you instead of a face to face meeting etc, sure we would all be depressed.

The line manager is under pressure as well and the last thing he or she needs is to waste an hour with a self absorbed under performer.
