Thankfully we are in Ireland where the law is on your side when you defend yourself against scum who burgle you at 1am in the morning. Unfortunately in Britain, the burglars have the law on their side!

As far as I know the law in Ireland says you can use equivalent force, so if someone breaks into your house with a baseball bat then you are legally allowed use a base ball bat to defend yourselves, If some one is coming to kill you with a knife you are allowed stab them and so on, but if they break in unarmed you are not allowed hit them over the head with a hammer for example.

This law was introduced a few years ago when the old man down the country was arrested for shooting a burglar and there was public outcry that the guy had been arrested.

Whilst there are better protections if you were at home, the same reasons apply to using reasonable self-defence. If the gravity of the situation requires force to protect oneselfs even if that may result in the death of an assailant then its the lawfulness is what comes into it.

It would be very difficult to explain any form of calculation on the person attacked especially for self preservation, when you are being attacked by someone brandishing a knife in a slashing manner.

If someone drove a car over that guy I wouldn't convict. Jesus like usually the point of a weapon is threat/intimidation but he wasn't long starting to swipe with it. It'll be a shame if he makes it to a courtroom.

It's reasonable force, and not equivalent but when the law changed it was to that you believe is reasonable force.

it's why the killkenny lad who killed the 1 and injured the other wasn't charged, but why the hedge clippers guy was but then acquitted. Charges were brought as they didn't agree that belief was honestly held. It's very hard to prove whether a belief is honestly held or not.

Best to have a wide array of weapons by your bed, then judge what the burglar has and pick up the equivalent weapon.:-)

I've never understood the thinking behind calling someone like this a hero. He defended himself. If he hadn't he could be dead. That's self survival, not heroism. I don't blame him for it but how exactly is it heroic? Heroism is putting your life at risk for someone else.

He was defending his terrified bedridden wife who suffers from dementia against two intruders half his age, using one of their weapons against them. Dunno about you but the man sounds like a hero to me.

As for the dead? He belonged to a family politely described as antisocial career criminals who preyed on the old and weak(they thought) and were so brazen and unrepentant about this they boasted about it on social media. Now if they were teenagers and/or junkies I'd have some sympathy believe it or not. The young can go astray all too easily and there would be an element of but for the grace of god in my thinking there. However these "men" were well beyond the age of mature reason, but happily continued on this repellent path. So for me they're better described as unrepentant feral scum that would serve humanity best by being locked up away from decent people. Or in this case of poetic justice dying by the hand of the "old and weak". Good riddance.

If that offends the right on? Meh. I just hope that if it ever did come to it I'd have half the fortitude and strength that elderly man showed. *eyes accurate "decorative" Roman gladius on the wall*

There was a similar case three(?) years ago, again in England where a scumbag tried to burgle an elderly couple's home, only to get the living sh1te knocked out of him by a near 80 year old, who just happened to be an ex army self defence instructor and lifetime boxer with a fair few wins under his belt. Sweeeeet.
