I see a lot of DIY MAME cabs on Adverts that are upwards of €1,000. What's the actual cost of these? Don't want any of the tacky decals or LEDs.

Is it difficult sourcing a broken/cheap cabinet? I have a monitor and speakers so would need to build a cheap barebones PC or get a Raspberry Pi and an arcade stick.

Just wondering the cost, will probably look at building one next year. Could have a cabinet built if it's difficult to source a broken one.

Stay away from MAME scratch builds, the likes of which you see on adverts. 90% of them are rubbish and don't feel at all authentic, especially with those big LCD screens.

I'd say you'd build a shell for well under €150 if you wanted to use really quality hardwood ply.

I got a sheet of Malaysian ply for about €60 last week for house stuff, now that is probably designed for being in external conditions or if you want to make a nuke proof cab

. That was 24mm so an 18mm one would be even cheaper. You could go even cheaper again and get MDF and won't make a huge difference.

For any decent sized cab you will use 2 8x4 sheets though. Few other lengths of timber and some caster wheels and you'd have a shell fairly quickly.

Finishing it is where the expenses come I think. Side art, T moulding, lighting. Plus then a screen and something to actually run the games. It all adds up.

The woodwork is all assuming you have the tools, skills and time to do it yourself too. I would just advise against MDF, I built a bartop a few years ago from it and any dampness gets near MDF and it's just a giant sponge, ruined my fun pretty quickly haha

So, it seems there's a translation out there for the PSX menu system, I wonder if I should try installing it or leave it as it is.
I'd love to know how to stop that interference on startup.
I'll keep the videos already recorded, but I have no idea how much room they are taking up.
Also, it can be connected to the internet but not sure if it's modern enough to accept a Wifi network, more investigating required!

Anyone else feeling a bit overwhelmed with the amount of games coming out or retro games at your disposal?

With VR, humble bundles and other cheap game bundles the completionist in me is complete dead I've so much stuff to get through.

I think gamers have never been so spoiled for choice before than in the last few years.

I'd love to be able to focus on one game at a time, but theres always something new and exciting popping up.

I should take a leaf out of Retr0's book and just be over critical of games so I only have a few to play!

No current consoles here, latest is a WiiU and my laptop can't run new games, so I don't have any issues with worrying about playing the latest and greatest. I think the last 'new' game I bought was BOTW!

So remember the Toki remake announced in say... 2009? A trailer came out and nothing came of it.

As for modern games they all kind of bore me. Find it harder to keep up with indie releases and all the odd old Japanese stuff coming to steam.

Modern games just aren't grabbing me at all these days, and I'm trying to find time to play my collection tbh.

I don't have too many modern games in the pipeline, last I picked up was Wolfenstein 2 and haven't really started it. Got it on Amazon during black Friday for about €30, still have to finish The Old Blood. Thought about picking up Burnout Paradise Remastered as I never had the DLC but I have too many games unfinished, €35 though...

Before Christmas was going for platinum trophy in Bully and making progress on Need for Speed (2015).

Trackmania Turbo is free on PS Plus this month so I'll check that out, other than that just waiting for Red Dead 2. Plenty of games on the shelf waiting to be finished. Last of Us DLC, Fallout 4 very very near the end, Mad Max, Dying Light, Resident Evil 7 free DLC.

And yet I'm wasting time watching podcasts :P

Got fortnite myself last night to see what all the fuss was about.

Found it pretty crappy to be honest. I mean it's alright but nothing to amazing. I either dropped into a really busy area, got a few kills and then died or dropped into a quite area and wasted 5-6 mins just searching and waiting for someone to show up.

Deleted it afterwards and went back to Dark Souls 3

Fortnige is pretty much crappy pubg. It's only big because it's a fre alternative and the only battle royale option for PS4,

In a nutshell. Mad to play PUBG myself, but my PC is on it's last legs. One of my graphics cards packed it in a while ago. I'll build a new one during the summer

I've been playing a fair bit of PUBG. Considering how frenetic multiplayer FPS typically is I'm finding it a nice change. If I'm tired after work can just land early, loot up and stay away from high traffic areas and do pretty well. You can alternatively just jump in somewhere hectic if you feel like it.

I haven't played Fortnite but I believe the main hook with that is the building. Because you can construct stuff so fast there's a fun cat and mouse aspect of building and counter building people to get position. The actual shooting is sort of secondary. Don't think it's for me but it's definitely more than a cheap clone of H1Z1 or PUBG or whatever.

I just found the building mechanics irritating more than anything. Like I get how it's meant to work but just isn't for me. Really reminds me of TF2 with the whole look of it now.

I've wanted to play PUBG for ages now. Saving up for a new PC. Had to spend €500 on a baby pram/buggy ( I don't know the difference ) the other day so I'll be another while before I get a chance.

Gave it a try once and I'm not too sure what to think of it from that try. I got the same busy-empty experience as you did.

Reminds me of my third marriage

Yeah I really hate the aesthetic of the game. It's got a cheap Chinese TF2/Overwatch knock off look to it. I'd say Fortnite was going the way of Paladins until they added Battle Royale. It would have failed hard and abandoned in a few weeks time. Now it's the biggest game at the moment. Not bad considering the small satellite Epic team that developed it had to fight hard to get it greenlit. Can't really fault the support Epic are giving the game either, the shooting just feels so unsatisfying to me and the building doesn't click.

PUBG being garbage on console, and not on PS4 is probably another major issue as to why Fortnite is doing better. I don't think I'd be into the building either but I get why people like it. PUBG is leaning towards proper simulation shooter mechanics, just very streamlined ones, so it's a wonder it's as popular as it is.
