The Kerry Sniper

So it seems that a photographer was mistaken for a sniper on a beach in Kerry sparking a major Garda response.

One local told The Kerryman that the situation steadily "got more and more bizarre" and that at one point Gardaí had entered a pub in the village seeking to borrow a set of binoculars.

The bar’s staff and patrons were unable to assist but a villager quickly came to the guards’ aid, providing them with a set of field glasses to help in their search.

:eek: I had to check the date on the article to make sure I wasn't reading an article from yesterday.

Good to see we've got all the resources and equipment in place should we ever have a real situation develop

A Garda spokesperson, who confirmed the basic facts of the incident, said that for operational reasons the precise details of the search, and the units that responded to the alert, can not be disclosed.

Operational reasons = we're embarrassed as hell and don't really want to make it worse than it already is

In fairness, some person rang it in as seeing a man with a gun roaming about. They probably knew it was somebody over reacting, but sure, it doesn't mean they can't take it any less seriously.

Say it was a man who had issues/a Raul Moate scenario, "embarrassment" would be the least of their worries if they didn't attend.

There are genuine reasons why somebody would be carrying a gun in the countryside surely, the Guards shouldn't have jumped to the conclusion that a deranged gunman was running amok.

Strangely enough I was walking my dogs by the sea a few years ago in a quiet spot. I heard a gunshot, not a shotgun, but a rifle. I put the dogs on lead & tied them to a rock & then I started gingerly climbing a small headland.

There were two guys, with a hunting rifle, taking pot shots at the seagulls. I called the Guards but never heard anymore about it.

There's no season for many quarry species. This was a public area, which is permissible, but even on private land the 'sniper' may have been asked to target foxes by the landowner.
It all reads like a ridiculous over-reaction or a spoof.
