Galway City pubs and little else

After my second visit to the city on the tribes, and after really wanting to like the place, I realized I hate it. For all the hype about it being a great place there is nothing to do there except pubs.

Now do not give me this "has a theatre" and "race week" as that's not enough and the latter is all about boozing. I would hate to live there.

Where are the museums, interesting locations and urban mystery that makes a city interesting? It's all getting ****faced while listening to ididly reel and jigs and you can get that anywhere.

For all it's alleged coolness, it's offers nothing else to tourist apart from pubs. People slag off Limerick, but that has way more going for it now.

Galway city is rubbish.

I moved to the West nearly 20 years ago & Galway is still magical to me. I am well travelled & I think that Galway is a great little City.

But if you don't like it then please don't spoil the atmosphere

I doubt very much that is the attitude you got. I might be biased but Galway people are some of the most laid back and easy going people in the country. And we have more than one theatre by the way, you must not have got to know the place that well if you didn't know that!

id include some of the smuggest people in the country

galway city is an incredibly smug place

its insanely over rated but is such a darling of the media , it could be raining cow sh1t and the place would still have everyone salivating over it

personally i hate it , worst climate of any city in the country , worst traffic , insanely expensive considering how small it is , its more expensive to buy a house in galway right now than in cork city on average , a culture of gouging , galway folk are incredibly greedy and ive lived in several places on this island , never mind overseas

The thing is though is that Galway city is in Galway which is amazing. If you tire of the city just make your way out to one of the most scenic places in Ireland. Only idiots wouldn't be able to keep themselves entertained in that part of Ireland. Don't criticise somewhere that would be considered a glorified town in most places in the world. Just snarky and pathetic.

the county of galway is even worse than the city, connemara looks beautiful but no more so than most of donegal or kerry but no one lives out there

east galway is about the most boring place in the country , no good towns and mostly forgettable scenery , oh and about the most clannish folk in the land

did i mention the awful weather ?

Your opinion of Galway seems a bit OTT in its anger.

I will agree with you on the crap weather though, no disputing that. It rains, a lot.

I've lived in Galway city my entire life( just short of half a century) and have never, ever heard anyone describe race week by either of those monikers.
Most of the race week crowd are blow-ins from the rest of the country so maybe be careful how you describe the crowd.

Galway is a modest city with a thriving university, a strong industrial sector and a booming tourist trade.
Its fighting well above its weight and doing really well compared to a lot of similar sized and larger cities.
It caters well for the local population..small-medium theatre, small museum, lots of pubs of all shapes and sizes with good intimate music venues.
The charm of Galway is to be able to kick back and relax, blend into the scenery, enjoy the moment and let life roll by around you.
The people who tend to enjoy it here are the ones who don't need to be entertained and are just happy to join in with the craic.
If you want to be entertained, off to Disneyland Paris with you.

Come down if ye like. Stay home if ye like. We couldn't give a fig either way.

Galway is really pretty, the city and county. I remember as a child I barely took notice of my surroundings, I could barely make my way around my local area of Dublin for that reason. When I was 12 I went to the gaeltacht in connemara, I remember my mum and dad driving me down, through the many hills and lush fields,the unspoilt beauty. We stopped at a beach on the way, it was gorgeous, white sand, amazing big stone boulders and sea caves, and not another person in sight but our family on a beautiful blue sky sunny dayAfter that we stopped off in galway for lunch. At this stage in my life Id hardly visited any other counties in ireland. I remember thinking it was stunning, I thought the landscape was so mystifying and beautiful.And galway itself like a little fairytale town. I had been to holidays in france and italy all the nice little coastal towns in the mediterranean,I was just interested in my pizza and ice cream and swimming in the pool tbh.
Galway is the first place I ever distinctly remember thinking was beautiful in my life

Thread really cracks me up but the OP does have a point. Galway is best as a place to base yourself for exploring Connemara, but better still venture further west and stay in Roundstone, Ballynahinch, Clifden or Moyard - heaven!

i like dublin , cork , i like limerick too , i even quite like waterford

i just think galway is the most over rated place in the country and i include the county of galway , the county of cork is great by comparison

i prefer county mayo to county galway

Was there for a midweek break the other week. Enjoyed the pubs, walks along the coast in salthill, the locals and the seafood. Grand auld place, and handy to get too. Seemed to be doing a booming tourist trade in freezing, blustery February too.

conemarra is beautiful but its not as nice as either donegal or kerry , east galway is flat and very boring , the towns in east galway are also crap

I could have put it better.. I know several musicians from over the years,who packed their bags and moved to Galway in a bid to launch their musical careers, only to find that the scene in Galway is pretty saturated with good players and singers. It would have been better to go in with a level head and not too lofty expectations. Im guessing that Nashville and Austin would be the same but on a much larger scale.

Next to Roisin Dubh in Lower Dominick st, formally Taylor's Bar which was a brilliant pub with the nuttiest, spaciest trad sessions and a rather cool beer garden to have a sneaky spliff.

It’s amaxing how some posters have to keep coming back on here time after time to tell us how much they dislike Galway . I think we pretty much get it the first time . Still I’m sure there right and the hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to Galway are wrong

For me, Galway is a city with an undiagnosed identity problem...it doesn't know what it is...the need for tourism smothers the city's actual culture...

It kind of reflects what happened to the Irish collective personality during the Celtic Tiger...in that it didn't know how to spend its new found wealth...didn't exactly wear that new found wealth well...went from being a fairly grounded provincial town to an almost insufferable small city in the space of a decade....it sometimes believes its own nonsense...

I finally had enough of this Cultured Arty town when someone once described Galway as "not so much a place, more of a state of mind"...and when the local BMW dealer decided to build a putting green on the roof of his BMW dealership....

Yeh exactly. its really quite nice for a small town, and has a lot going on for a town its size. You won't find many towns in the world that size that are all year round as fun and full of energy as galway

Connemara is the most racist place i've ever encountered in Ireland. The n word was completely socially acceptable from Spiddal to Carraroe.

I was watching England play in the world cup in a pub in Inverin and the entire pub cheered when a local called Sturridge a black bastard when he scored. I hadn't heard stuff like that in a pub since the early 90's.
