'Hope he died roaring'

'Hope he died roaring' is oft used when we hear someone we don't like after passing. It could be attributed to criminals or people who held positions of power in the past. Politicians are often targeted, religious clergy as well.

The thing that gets me though is why people use such a term in the first place?

If you are religious in anyway especially a Christian of any denomination, a central tenant of that is forgiveness. Why would you want someone to be in excruciating pain while on their deathbed.

Even more bizarrely are those who are not religious in anyway. Normally these would be irreligious, probably progressive in their views, yet they hope someone who passed away is in agony when they die. Explain that one to me?

Maybe these people or people in general are just pricks and disturbed deep down, and just label to justify their inner contradictions so they can rest easy.

You can call yourself a Christian but do you have the capacity for forgiveness?
You call yourself a non-religious progressive/liberal yet want someone to be in pain in their last moments?

Anyone explain this to me?

Yes, it actually is. Humans are queer bunch. However I wanted to highlight the fact that individuals on one hand would be against things like torture, corporal punishment, capital punishment and so on. Yet on the other hand, they get self gratification at the thought of someone they dislike being in pain.

I suppose we are very much Old Testament in our core. The New Testament was supposed to be about turning the other cheek, there is an attempt of progression there.
Yet our modern world is secular and progressive, but we kid ourselves that we are actually that much more advanced than the people who were around in the Old Testament era.

How do you know anything about what Jesus has done? An heavily edited book and being told what it means is all you have. The arrogance of the religious is pretty insulting. All we really know is this reality.

The fact so many people call themselves christians and also want people to die in pain as punishment just shows their hypocritical nature. Not in favour of capital punishment or torture as somebody has to do it. People worry about people who torture people for pleasure but torturing somebody because you think you are morally right is equal in my eyes.

I think the expression is one people use but few mean literally. It would be a rare person who truly hopes someone dies roaring in agony, no matter how bad they are.

Are you telling me that you wouldn't feel hatred towards a child molester that raped multiple kids during his life, for example? Would you forgive that simply because he has died or would you think "good riddance"? Or how about a serial killer? What about someone like Hitler?

Quite honestly I think you would be the strange one to not feel hatred towards people like these and be glad about their death. But my point is, we all have different breaking points for forgiveness where once they're crossed we no longer feel sympathy towards the person and feel okay with expressing that through sayings such as that. Certain people's actions are just so deeply abhorrent that we can feel negative emotions towards them so strongly that we wish them pain and suffering. It's honestly very simple, to the point that I think you're just virtue signalling.

And yet as a Catholic you believe that Christ may not have forgiven his victim if he died unconfessed (through no fault of his own since he was murdered).

An eternity of torture now for that time he stole the biscuit and lied about it in confession.

Personally Im fairly indifferent, I don't 'wish' for anybody to die in agony

Also Im pretty sure christians only practice the concept of forgiveness on those who wish for it and are remorseful. Maybe the person in question is even proud of their crimes, a christian will not forgive them for what they did then

Think what you like, and I'll think what I like about the use of the term virtue signalling to negate the opinion of someone who doesn't share someone elses views.

You can hate a person for what they've done without glorying in their suffering. I don't think I'd get much satisfaction from someone elses pain, but if they hurt me or my loved ones personally I might. I don't know.

I don't think many people mean it literally when they say they hope someone dies roaring, because few people have that level of justification for such a dark desire. It would take a lot to justify.

Generally Christians in this country are. Either way the point stands. The murdered guy might be going to hell because he didn’t live long enough to find Jesus or be born again while the murder did find Jesus and is therefore saved.
