The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Judging by how fast a tyre centre can have some of these locking nuts off I'd imagine the trick has caught on with the scum also.

I really don't get why the GTI/R parts are so desperately sought after, it seems they're more attractive than other cars. What's the big fuss over them?

I’d have thought it was obvious, no? There’s a huge market on the usual selling sites for VAG parts. Young sh1ts with base spec Golfs eager for the GTI “look” on the cheap. A set of GTI / R wheels with tyres would cost you the bones of €5k retail! Those rear light clusters, bones of a grand too.

Add to that a pretty hefty market for all things VAG on the continent and Eastern Europe and it becomes quite clear that there is money to be made from the parts.

The only thing to really do these days is aftermarket alarm, remove the locking key from it's usual spot and change the locking nuts completely to the high security ones (that make it far more difficult to hammer a slightly smaller socket over them and remove), as well as parking your car with it's rear/side right up against a wall.

I never really thought of it. There's obviously no shortage of lads doing up their base spec cars, I just never thought they'd go to the effort of stealing the parts to put on their own cars especially when you can buy cheaper cloned parts. I think it's just hearing the likes of fog lights being robbed off non Golf models that I find absurd. You'd have to have something really wrong with you to want wing mirror covers or fog lights that bad.

The selling aspect of it isn't helped by the prices they're selling for. Obviously there's good money to be made.

It still just doesn't add up in my head for some reason. It's just a Golf at the end of the day. I figured there'd be more head turning with Audi S/RS, BMW M or AMG parts. Especially how popular kits are on standard cars these days. You can even get an AMG trim A Class...

The market for VAG performance parts ("hot" or otherwise) is massive, both in this country and across Europe. It would dwarf the other marques you've mentioned.

They don’t work on the blue imo. I was tempted to spec them with the grey but the thoughts that they’d be much harder to keep looking good put me off. Stone chips (which the prets are very prone to picking up) would look cat. And kerb marks....

I was so close to pulling the trigger on a new GTI after following this thread since 2014 - honestly I've been put off by Joe's experience and those pictures posted a few pages back.

Back looking at a new mx5 now ha ha talk about two different vehicles! Great thread btw and has been extremely useful.

Black prets don't suit lapiz blue, I think they look good on red or white.

Mine is white and I'd consider a refurb to black, I also have gloss black mirror caps. ECS tuning have also released some honeycomb rear bumper inserts to replace the red reflectors.
I think these bits plus a performance pack rear spoiler lip would be nice additions.

Yes, it's expensive for what it is though, nearly €300 inc vat.

The Americans love them, but mainly because a lot of them didn't get the Lighting Package on their cars and they came with the standard (and pretty awful looking) Halogens, which look terrible themselves.

I'd personally go for OEM upgrades if you're looking to change.

There seems to be a lot of work to get the OEM Xenons to fit in the non lighting package cars. I'm happy enough to install the replicas myself with them being almost completely plug and play. Don't know if id be comfortable fitting and wiring the OEM's myself so that would add mechanics costs to the price.

But then again it may be worth saving up the extra cash and cutting out all the worry of the replicas being sh!te quality.

I might be a few days late to this, but you should check out Osram's Xenarc MK7 headlights. They are more expensive than the Ed style, but they're considerably higher quality. They're also one of the first retrofit headlights for halogen cars that are fully EU legal, and don't require washers or auto-levelling.

I've a set on the way for review for my MK6, so I'll update when they're in.

Yes, it used to belong to Kodirl on here! Its a PP afaik.

Just window shopping to be honest, it's a nice car with a decent spec, pricing isn't far off either. My ideal spec will be a 5 door PP with DSG. I have to think practically so a 3 door will be out.

I've changed my mind about black Prets. Saw them on a white R, they look very well. Still think the regular ones would look better on a black car though.
