A few years ago afaik, they were getting too much grief over the fact that they would accept those with serious criminal records wanting a place to hide with a new identity.

I don't know why people are laughing at the question.

First off I've no idea how the FFL cycles its recruit training syllabus, I'd imagine they train year round.

Speaking for myself I've often chosen courses or oversea's service on the time of year I'd be on the ground or traveling.

Given a choice I'd always avoid extremes of either hot or cold.. Or a winter in the DFTC or running around the Wicklow mountains, gimme Spring/Summer time please

I'm not laughing at him, although it is amusing to ask that, as you will be trained in the extremes, to make sure you will survive in the extremes should you find yourself in the situation when serving, Like Artic training, put into freezing lakes, can you get out, will you survive if you do, all necessary, then the opposite in jungles, hence the high rate of attrition. s'all,

Surly around January or March you get the warmer weather of spring and summer compared to the rain and cold of autumn and winter. Though it probably comes down to what do you think you can take better a bit of hypothermia or heatstroke!

I met an Irish guy(Dubliner) a couple of years ago and he was finished his term in the legion. Really glad he did it. He was a troubled teen by the looks of him and it sorted his life out big time.
He said he had a number and if he was ever in trouble or needed help anywhere in the world he just had to call it and they would come get him.
Said he had to speak French or he couldn't get fed or anything. Said he is fluent now.

The language of the FFL IS French, no matter what your native language might be.

You will learn it quickly, either by osmosis, or, just as likely, by impact.

Anyhow, I think that this thread, obviously begun as a bit of a laff by the OP, has served its purpose - with literally thousands of more worthwhile and informative posts on the subject of the FFL here on boards, this one has had its [mostly wasted] time.

Eh as far as I know there is no 'Easy' with these guys, seen a documentary one time about them , what would make anyone want to join, they make the 'SAS' look like 'The Railway Chrildren'. Have another think there my friend.

I think that the more rational among us have already decided that anybody who thinks that joining the FFL at a time favourable to him will make an iota of difference to the beasting that he's in for for joining at - any time - is taking the p*ss out of all of us.

He has clearly done zero research, let alone taken the trouble to go back in this forum where there are actually ex-FFL members posting advice to wannabe Beau Gestes.

Yeah well I know all that. So that's why I will be using the next year to get super fit and learn a bit of Frog.

Out of interest and maybe you already mentioned it, have you looked at the other options? Irish the BA, if so what turned you off? I know there are reasons why some choose the FL over the other two just wondering what you saw in them that you thought could not be replicated at the very least in the BA or maybe even the IDF. Though i am fully aware of reason fro choosing the BA and FL over the IDF particularly in the last number of years.

Ok if thats the way you are looking at it fine, i don't really agree with you if you are looking for a challenge certainly in the BAF units like the RMC, PARAs and specialists units if you were capable and motivated enough could offer that option, I'm sure to limited extent so could the IDF. That the only reason? Im sure you have given it a lot of thought its just seems like a slightly simplistic reason, the difference in the life style and i'm not talking about the toughness of the training but all aspects of life is pretty immense. Well as already stated you get the two weeks at Christmas and on top of that:
Few days at midterm in February,
Two weeks at Easter,
Three months in the summer,
Midterm in October.
Any Holy days,
+ bank holidays.
