Am I the only one who sees "red I" and thinks "muck savage". Conjures up images of lads with "no shmoke, no poke" stickers.

For me it's a deterrent like like Donegal cars with funny number plate fonts or Irish reg. numbers on yellow plates.

Nice looking car with a decent bit of tax and test. They are prone to all manner of cruel and unusual failures though and that's before you get to the BXE. Provably more "one for the brave".

The bxe conrod issue is relatively easy to prevent. There is more expensive issues with those 1.9tdi's like hg failure and camshaft wear.

That must be among the last of the 1.9 TDI? For some reason I thought by 2008 at least, the Passat was 2.0 TDI and later (2009?) 1.6 tdi too

The steering wheel in Mk4 Golfs usually doesn't wear high mileage very well, but that looks pretty good above (a good sign imo)
