Ah Paddy the dog got a few!! Was trying to learn the computer system today, it's one giant circle with colours for cows that are dry, pregnant, open, fresh calved etc with full vet, calving, feet, sickness history for each. Definitely different from me in Leitrim with a wee book to write in.
I'll tell ya though, I'd be so fat if I lived here, the takeaways are so good. Had half a deep fried pizza and mushy pea fritters tonight.

Here's the big shorthorn bull, I let a heifer into him earlier so he was happy out!

Huevos de torres. Bulls eggs. The neighbouring parish had an Australian priest for a spell back in 01. Mad into farming here. Told a story from the altar one Sunday morning featuring bulls balls. He had the church in stitches. Not something youd hear from the local clergy.

Ask him to recount the history of the farm/land. Do your fields have names, if so does he know why they have that name and what is their background. Are there any archeological sites or features, ring forts, Mass rocks, covered foundations of old farmsteads/famine cottages-their family name, etc on your farm.

Neither bull has a ring, never asked why as I'm the Oirish new wain. Dehorning weeeell they were just forgot about it seems. I've been doing all born since I first came here so that's one thing sorted

We always have a good few to skull most years as their buds are too big to use the iron on when we buy them in. I wonder how much energy is used/wasted on growing horns.

Be sure to draw a map of the water pipes too. I drew mine over Christmas in case they're needed in future.

Mind you, I only did it after spending a half day trying to find the run of pipes under concrete. Done now though. And leak fixed too.

Would love to do that but most are down 40 years so dad hasn't a notion where they are....hence my earlier comment about painting the pipes pink!! I know where some are but others-god help me trying to find them! Good idea thou-that's the sort of things I was thinking I'll need to know.

Print off a map of the farm with the acreage/hectares of each field.
You can use Google maps or/and Maps.ie.
Ask about the rent on the fields.
How much, length of leases, who to exactly, terms of leases.
Ask who his solicitor is.
Ask who all the neighbouring farmers to all the fields are.
Ask does he know where any stone or pipe field drains are.

As for the water pipes get the water divining rods out.;)

Thought some of you might find this interesting. I follow a guy on YT who is cycling around the world on a unicycle. Currently in New Zealand and was helping out on a sheep farm for a bit. There is some footage of them tailing lambs that was pretty handy. Nice little setup. No rubber rings in sight.

Sheep part starts around 4:20.

But above all record your father in both video and sound, get him to tell you the stories of his life and of those around you, family and neighbours . video them working, every day things, these form the memories of people, not the posed photos at weddings.

Funny that. Only last week a close relative passed away. She was in her 80's. We were going through the family tree with the rest of the family and I knew way more than anyone. Why, well I recorded it all from this relative that passed away. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Her sister was looking at a broach with 1895 and from Mary to Dorothy engraved on it. Her sister who is also 80, didnt knew who either Mary or Dorothy were. Well Mary was their grandmother who worked in New York as a nanny but returned to Ireland. Dorothy was the child she minded there.

Wrote it all down last night. Drains-dad thought of-one I had no awareness of. Bordering neighbours is v good as there is some I don't know. We aren't too bad with rights of way but I must double check that. It's good to get stuff like this clear in my head. Trying to record big expenses anounts typically spent on fertiliser contractors etc as well so I can plan the year better with no surprises. I suppose you have to know this stuff...

Any rocks? I found a big one last year strategically placed bunch of briars was hiding it. The father said that's why he never removed chopped those briars

Thanks muckitt-that's a good observation. I'm trying to make things as painless as possible where they can be. Our water systems v complicated as well so want to get my head around it. But I'll prob end up bypassing som of the things he has done anyway as it will be easier go from scratch. Scary how much you don't know at times!

Why change it if it's working, you'll find it easy enough if it leaks.

Is ZXT tomschoice iceberg? I have him used on a couple of heifers at the moment. Is he easy calved in general. I know his calving difficulty is 4% ish iirc.

Oh nothing will be changed until there is a problem-I don't have time to make the problems for myself!!! I'm just mentally calculating how many more years a 40 year old line of piping has.
