Looked at the pitches beside McHale Park at 12 today and they looked unplayable. Stewards nearby even said they would be suprised if the game went ahead.
A pity the Connacht Council couldn't make their decision then rather than have taken the money and cancel 2 hours later.

Very poor form by John Prenty and co for calling that game off so late and apparently still taking money off supporters at 1:50pm and not giving money back.

I presume todays named team will start against Leitrim on Wednesday then a full 15 changes will be made for Friday night with a few of the lads back from their Asian holiday given starts.

That's three games in a matter of 5 days as they're out against Roscommon next Sunday in the Hyde.

surely your entitled to a refund if you cant make the rearranged fixture. i couldnt see concert operators getting away with something like this.

My guess is that their rationale is not everybody would've paid in (for different reasons) so they don't know who to money back to. And some lads will didn't pay in would look for a refund. That's just me speculating. How much was it to get in? Was there a student / oap rate? That would further complicate it

I think you're on the money re the rationale for an absence of refunds,lot of hassle too.All that hassle and inconvenience for both the officials and travelling supporters could have been saved with an earlier decision.

Will be interesting to see what kind of crowd turns up Friday night,definitely up on three thousand stalwarts turned up today.Friday night game against the old enemy under the hopefully repaired floodlights a very attractive prospect.;)

My Dad suggested just opening the gates for the rescheduled game but I guess crowd control regulations would prohibit that...

Anybody with half a brain would know that today’s game would not go ahead.
Maybe the men in white coats should have been taken names on the way in.
And the lads that traveled from Galway.........straight to the big house.

If it was that obvious how is it that the people who decide whether pitch is playable or not couldn't decide early in the day and save everybody who travelled the hassle.
Were they expecting a mega thaw just before 2 o clock when it hadn't happened already.
Any racecourse in the country is subject to early morning inspections if weather and conditions are in doubt and they call it there and then no hanging around.
As for what happened in castlebar today it's a Mickey Mouse set up.no point saying fans should have heads examined when the people in charge haven't a clue.mickey mouse club

They should have made the decision not to play it early in the day and got announcements out on mid west and Galway bay fm where the fans would be listening for updates instead of going the Mickey Mouse route and turning the whole thing into an amateur looking farce.
Fans would be listening to radio and heard cancellation and got on with their lives instead of travelling and burning diesel.
Once again those in charge too busy watching the few pounds then thinking of the players and fans

I said it at the time Chris Barrett going in Aussie rules trip wouldn't end well........sure enough he picked up a knee injury and will be out for first 4 league games

4 massive losses for the league, but a chance for others.

Could be a long campaign though. Dublin and Kerry will always do enough and I'm sure the Northern Teams are flat out since November. We'll be coming in much more under-cooked.

It's all about Galway in May though. Can't afford another slip-up there this year

4 big players but I would look on the positive. They'll be well rested and raring to go for the summer. We've a squad to deal with it and it'll give a chance for others to get some meaniful experience come Div 1.

Dont think they had any choice really. It would have been a nightmare to try and organise cash refunds yesterday and if it was to be done properly would have taken an age to sort everyone out.

Rubbish. Why are they offering refunds so? And the Connaught Council will probably lose out overall as there will be the same costs associated with the refixed game as yesterday.

Would have been some craic - "do you have change for a 20? Anyone with change for a 20 for this man? Oh you bought two tickets, not 1? Show us your student ID again"

Essentially it would have taken hours and been a disaster with crowd control

Anyhow, the main issue is of course the time of the year (or whether these events should even be played in the first instance).

While they have finally done something to shorten the length of the Championship, it still could easily be played off from July - September, and have the league covering April - June. Leave mid February and March for any pre-season kickabouts and Sigerson, under 20's and so on.

Reported in the Connaught Telegraph that Declan Shaw and Benji Smith are set to take over as the new management team at Castlebar Mitchels.

Reports that they were to be ratified tonight by the executive.

Alan Flynn former Galway under 21 football manager has been linked with the management setup.
