I wonder if it stands to reason that those sort of cars will become cheaper after the Christmas period when people try and recoup their costs?

For a private sale I wouldn't say so. Their costs are what they bought the car for before, so usually they're making a huge paper loss anyway (unless they're traders).
Of course cars go down in value over time, but at this end of the market a seller would usually keep reducing the price until it sells regardless of the time of year.

If someone has a new car bought for 2018 delivery of course, they might slash the price to get it gone.

I don't think it's worth anywhere near that. And there's no chance it's bigger than an E-class estate - traditionally the biggest estate there is. What makes you think that? The long NCT and a bit of tax are nice though...
