Not much of a discount at £20 (Was £189.99, now £169.99) but it's the first time I've seen the new model reduced.

For anyone thinking of ordering one.

Use a revolut card if you have one and pay in GBP. It saved me about 7 euro.

Also don't forget to get a decent HDMI cable.

After considering the Shield overkill for Kodi use for ages, I succumbed last night and bought from the UK store(€179.95 through Revolut), will be able to compare with Mi box(€51.49 through Revolut) that i had purchase earlier last night

I had a Shield a few months ago but returned it because I considered it overkill and too expensive for what I wanted it for. (Kodi, Netflix, Youtube, etc).

In the meantime I bought a Fire TV gen 3 and have a two Mi Boxes in the post. I also bought two cheap Android boxes to play round with (one for LibreELEC and another for a simple always on NAS)

I've had the Shield in the checkout basket several times since it went on sale pondering if I should buy it or not. I don't think I'll make it until the end of the day without buying it.

Luckily earlier today I purchased an AVR with 6 hdmi input ports :pac:

My warehouse shield arrived.box was just was resealed with tape. Everything inside looks sealed. Don't have a chance to play with it til later .

I'm interested in hearing about this. Will be moving in the new year and may need to provide Plex in other rooms, but not keen on paying full whack for another Shield.

Let me ask a common question, what are the most used things about the shield. I see Netflix, YouTube, Kodi/Plex and stm emulation. Missing anything?

I have a fire tv box, second gen firestick and a mi box 4K.

I've ordered a shield to see if it performs any different too be honest.
Main reason to get the shield is to see how it performs with retro games. The other devices I use work very well for the "other" apps.

I'd add GameStream to that list too.

If you have a PC with an nVidia Graphics card then you can play your PC games on your TV via the Shield. There's an added bonus that the PC software you run doesn't have to be a game - any PC app can run so that might be useful to some. I've yet to bring Excel to my TV

For anyone would is willing to invest the time, read up on TVHeadend. There is an app which takes the feed from a TVHeadend server and feeds the LiveChannels app on Android TV.

I use the Vu+ PVR plug in in Kodi to share my sat box tumers to my Shield.
If you have a multituner Linux sat box it is a must have add on.

On the Shield, I love mine so much I own 3!
The 2015 model has an inbuilt IR receiver that I think was dropped from the 2017 model.
It really is an ideal home theatre piece of kit, mine are all paired with harmony remotes in their rooms.
The 2017 controller is much more solid and responsive than the the 2015 version and if you can pick up a 2017 version wirh controller and remote my advice would be go for it!

I do have a slight preference for the 2015 model purely because of the IR receiver, that makes HT integration a breeze.
You can add IR receiver via USB on the 2017 model or afaik the Pro has it built in but costs a lot more.

Can you outline the process and the addons (besides TV headed) you used

Does the 'host' TV have the saorview/freesat and then you stream it to the shield or are you referring to something different?

Would really appreciate it your input as I'd like to set this up

Got mine yesterday. Long time XBMC/Kodi user and this looks to be a great box for me so far.

Have a Mi Box which was my main viewing platform as Android TV for it is very easy to use.

Shield for me now does frame rate switching for 24p content in Kodi which Mi box doesn’t yet.
Other great thing is the IR blaster in the remote.
I can now control my Denom amp volume using Shield remote which is great.

How can I get Netflix to switch to 24p?
It’s still playing in 60Hz at the moment.
Is it because my amp & TV are HDMI 1.4 1080p only?

Basically, you need an old PC or Laptop to act as a server, install Ubuntu or Ubuntu server on it, install TV Headend on the server, stick in a UBS DVB-S2 tuner and a USB-T tuner, plug in your Sat and Ariel feeds, set up your channels and logos .. epg etc...

It's worth the effort because the server sits in your attic, under the stairs etc and you can stream anywhere. You can also run PLEX server , QBittorrent etc on this server if you like.

The Netflix app would have to implement the refresh rate switching like Kodi does. Which it does not unfortunately from what I see in my testing.

That's why I continue the to use the Netflix app on my TV, because it plays at the correct refresh rate.

Android really needs global automatic refresh rate switching. But I suppose since every app is developed differently, with various overlays and different methods of playing the content, it could be hard to achieve.

I find it funny people describe these boxes as the ultimate home theater solution when they can't actually play content properly. Compared to a cheap DVD / BluRay player which will set the correct refresh rate for a given frame rate.
