Can't find a thread on this yet, which I am really surprised at :eek::o

I saw this today and I think this might be my favourite movie this year! The pacing is so tight, the story is charming and well written, the morals are so admirable but most of all the moments of laughter are just so hearty, innocent, endearing and frequent.

Can't recommend it enough.

I saw this sequel at the IMC in Dun Laoghaire today. The movie was a treat for my mum's birthday which was last Sunday. I had a great laugh along with her & rest of the audience in the cinema. It was a brilliant movie. You should go see it if you can make it. A 5 star rating from me.

This belongs with the likes of Toy Story 2 in the lightly populated grouping of truly stellar sequels.

For an uplifting, accessible family film about a talking bear, it manages to embrace the cinematic spirit of directors from Wes Anderson to Buster Keaton (the finale plays out like a CG-enhanced variation on The General). Refreshing to see the likes of Grant and Gleeson just allowed to have a blast.

Bursting with enthusiasm and confidence, and sequences like the prison escape are among the most beautifully and wittily staged of the year.

I loved it, took my 11 year old at the weekend and she can't wait to see it again
I thought Hugh Grant was hilarious, really sending himself up, looked like he was having a blast doing it, def a way better actor than is commonly thought
Think it would be suitable for smaller kids too, nothing too scary for them and the one part (don't want to say too much to spoil) that has a bit of danger towards the end would prob go over the head of a 3year old
One of the best kids films I've seen in a long while, mind you in a year that hasn't had much kids films wise

Charming, delightful, sweet, funny, not to mention utterly & unreservedly enjoyable from start to finish. Not just an excellent kids movie, but a genuine, creative treat for adults & children alike, and arguably one of the few comedy sequels that managed to build & improve upon the original. Occasionally when watching a film, you can really get a sense of the mood of the cast & crew, so with Paddington 2 everyone must have had a blast; there wasn't a dud note anywhere, and while Hugh Grant will doubtlessly get the headlines for his energetic chewing of the scenery, everyone else gave it there all. Especially the titular character: well done to the casting department for finding such a talented, expressive bear!

Somewhere, in another universe, the Paddington film series came out with the original voice artist hired, Colin Firth, and I daresay didn't do half as well as it did here, because it's really hard to imagine anyone else but Ben Whishaw voicing Paddington. Firth would have been too old, too smug sounding, too ... well, too sounding like Colin Firth; Whishaw's gentle, curious intonations are a perfect match.

Paddington 2 - 9.5/10

Both of these films are absolutely incredible and have no right to be as good as they are. This film will take its place amongst the very best sequels ever made.

It manages to tap into that wonderful childhood magic that we all experienced at some point. Whether it was Roald Dahl, Classic Disney animations, The Muppets etc... It's like a children's picture book bought to life and it just completely wins you over from the off.

Hugh Grant takes his acting to levels I don't think anyone knew he was capable of. Both he and Brendan Gleeson are an absolute joy to watch.

The writing is insanely good, every little thing that happens in the opening of the film gets a pay off. The fabricated glossiness of London is just as inviting as it was in the first film.

It's just so unexpectedly good and it goes straight into my top 5 of the year. It's funny, well paced, brilliantly cast, well acted and extremely touching.

Damn near perfect.

Paddington introduces his new friends

. Absolutely hilarious, elegantly executed with a perfectly weighted punchline & I'm legitimately chuckling here thinking about it. In a world where blockbuster, conveyor-belt mediocrity hauls in obscene levels of cash, I hope Paddington 2 makes a killing, because it deserves it...

Myself and the Mrs took our two kids to see it yesterday and I must say we all had a great laugh. Really well made and I liked to the nod to the original TV series, during the passenger boat sequence. I particularly liked Gleeson's character and the other prisoners.

A good measure of whether a movie is entertaining or not is my eldest, who is autistic, and whether he is able to sit and not get restless. He had a blast and really enjoyed it. Money well spent I say.

I saw it again at the weekend and loved it all over again. It's well worth staying for the credits, I got to see the extra scene with Phoenix in it.

The fact that this thread only has 16 replies and Justice League has over 800 is an absolute travesty.

It just goes to show everyone is focusing their time and energy on the wrong thing. This is one of the very best films of the year, easily.

This film is so utterly delightful, I loved it. As has been mentioned before Grant was fantastic.

For anyone interested The Empire Podcast did a spoiler special for this with a fun interview with the two writers.

Absolutely adore Paddington. Haven't had the opportunity yet to see Paddington 1 but intending to at Christmas. After reading posts will definitely follow with Paddington 2.

Brought my niece as an excuse to go and my god, it was one of the best films I've seen in a long time. The acting is great from everyone. Funny feel good film. Tears of happiness and sadness also

Would rate it 5/5 and would go to see it again.

Just seen that it's not opening in the USA until January, I'd have thought it was a shoe-in as counter-programming to the new Star Wars not to mention Justice League.

Absolute loved this film, it's not a children film with a couple of knowing jokes for the adults dragged along, when kids and adults are laughing at the same time you know it's just a really funny film for all ages. I also welled up watching a certain scene even though I knew the eventual outcome, the animation and the voice acting could be not make Paddington any warmer as a character if they tried.

It is better than the first film, which is a seal of approval in itself as the first one was so good.

My favourite kids film this year, actually it's probably my favourite film of the year full stop.

Bumping the thread, if only to add a nice anecdote of how Hugh Grant himself recently remarked on Paddington 2 being the best film he ever worked on:

“I was presenting I think at the Golden Globes, and they do that thing when you walk out, and they say, ‘From the forthcoming Paddington 2, Hugh Grant.’ And someone showed me Twitter afterwards, and it was…people were full of derision. ‘Christ, has it come to that. Poor old Hugh. Paddington 2. Sequel to a kids film.’ ” Grant smiles a bit ruefully. “It’s particularly annoying in the case of Paddington 2, because I genuinely believe it may be the best film I’ve ever been in.”
