This case wasnt a lynch mob accusing an innocent person. Your example is someone doing it wrong and they should be punished for it. Left to the police yet man would still be doing it.

Equally uncomplicated is the fact mob justice isn't justice. These vigilante groups have wrongly accused people and ruined their lives by uploading the video of the confrontation. This guy remains innocent at this moment of time despite you calling him a cnut and deeming him guilty. He's *probably* guilty but I'm not going to judge him based on a video made by a bunch of cowards. I'll judge him if he pleads guilty or is found guilty by a Judge and/or Jury.

Out of interest, if your next door neighbour asks you for a chat and confesses he fancies young girls and needs some advice. What would your reaction be?

There is definitely an uncomfortable element watching the group mocking him and taking pleasure in his discomfort. In one sense I understand it, on the other I'd be more in favour of just letting justice at him. I suppose it's like when someone is guilty of rape/child molesting/murder. Many will shout that they should essentially be tortured to a slow painful death. Whilst I understand that sentiment, I would not ever want to be a person who takes pleasure in someone else's pain no matter what their crime. I'd rather just have that person taken out and shot, quickly and quietly for the benefit of all.

I agree that the videos should not be streamed live in the off chance that they have a case of mistaken identity or some other issue although in both cases I've seen recently the person was clearly guilty and all but admitted it during their sting.

I'd prefer to have the footage given to the cops and then only released once the conviction is completed. That way they rule out any possibility of error and also it gives the cops the chance to "discreetly" edit out anything that the group may have done in the video that could harm the conviction chances.

As for "creating criminals", I do understand the difference between those who desire and those who commit. I've seen interviews with paedophiles who hate the desires they have and go to great lengths to prevent themselves from ever actually acting on those impulses and as much as I despise the thoughts those people have, I have to admire the honesty of those who take steps like chemical castration to ensure that they do not pose a risk to children.

However, this person stepped away from an innocent man who struggles with a perverted attraction and became a real threat when he made steps to actually meet someone he believed to be a child.

Silent Justice on Facebook. There are a number of pictures of those caught, and videos of the stings in action. Not sure if he's been named officially although I believe he has been charged but he's 3 or 4 videos down. There is a separate video of the confrontation and another of the aftermath once the cops take him.

There was no "justice' meeted out - he was handed over to the police as is the correct thing to do. I reserve the right to refer to him as a cnut on the basis of his actions to date. I will reserve more descriptive terms for if and when he is found guilty and convicted.

The group clearly states they used the video to document and to further gather evidence and to prevent others claiming that the group beat him up etc. They also explicitly stated they wished for others to know that he had been caught out in the act of meeting up with an underage girl (after posting pictures of willies to the profile of that girl).

There’s an obvious gap in policing when a group of individuals can have such a success rate in snagging these predators. Fair play to them.

The big risk is mistaken identity though.

Paedophilia is a sexual paraphilia where someone is attracted to prepubescent children.

Child molesters are well, what it says on the tin. Abusing kids for many and varying reasons.

In this specific instance I'm kind of torn.

The group appear to be acting pretty responsibly. They're cornering this kind of person and having them arrested. They're not appearing with clubs and beating them to death, they're not out to ruin their lives with huge facebook exposés, they're out to catch a criminal and get him arrested.

But on the flipside, yes you have the presumption of innocence and the naming and shaming of a suspected criminal by a vigilante group, no matter what evidence you may have gathered, is antithetical to a fair justice system.

What they should be doing obviously is setting up the sting, and then telling the local cops to send down a plainclothes officer to make the arrest, rather than making a video and having him arrested afterwards.

But the goal of this group is not to rid the streets of child abusers. That's pissing in the wind. There isn't a finite number of them, you can't just lock them all up and be done with it.

The aim is scare them sh1tless. To make them think twice before grooming a child - that child they're grooming could be a sting set to catch them.

The only problem I see with this is that the more you do this, the more likely it is that the abusers will attend these meet-ups armed. So rather than the justice boner of seeing an abuser picked up by the cops, instead you have five people stabbed and two killed in a sting operation gone wrong.

If child abusers were at all "rational" about these meet-ups, they wouldn't go in the first place. So trying to scare them away by posting vigilante videos won't be as effective as they would be for rational people.

That would be what the FBI call a "situational offender". Someone who is sexually attracted to adult women but for whatever reason commits an impulsive act against a child.

Anyway, if the purpose of videoing the confrontation is to document it as evidence, there is NO NEED to stream it live or publish it, especially as these groups often accuse the wrong person.
