Just 4 Irish golfers have progressed onto European Tour Q-School Final Stage which will take place in Lumine GC in both the Lakes and Hills Golf courses. Cormac Sharvin who shot his lowest round (64 - 8 under) in his pro career, in the final round of Stage 2 qualifying in Las Colinas qualified yesterday along with Dermot McElroy in El Saler. Today Ruairdri McGee comfortably qualified for the 6 round marathon event in the delayed final round in Panoramica.

However there was awful heartbreak for Gary Hurley who missed out in a place in Final stage Q-School by one shot and one place. Despite shooting a highly commendable 6 under over 4 rounds, that still put him in a tied for 23rd with the top 22 qualifying from Panoramica GC. Despite his huge talent, the West Waterford GC pro has no status on any tour as things stand for 2018.

The other Irish player to qualify for Lumine is Gavin Moynihan. To summarize around 23 or 24 Irish players played either 1st stage or 2nd stage qualifying but just 3 have made it onto the Final Stage with Moynihan qualifying via the Challenge Tour rankings. That is a very poor return and really this needs to be a wake up call for all those involved in promoting Irish golf. Personally I think that the government needs to start increasing funding that it gives to Sport Ireland and Team Ireland Golf for fledgling pros and even invest on those elite amateurs seeking a future in the pro game. 94,500 euro was the 2017 figure that was handed by Team Ireland Golf to around 9 or 10 pros this year from the likes of Moynihan, Hurley etc. That is an unacceptably low figure.

I also think another issue that needs to be addressed is that a lot of Ireland's elite amateurs are not playing enough of our top amateur events here and are not getting the exposure of regularly contending in these events. The feeling of winning a South, West of Ireland or the Mullingar Scratch Cup is of much greater importance then finishing 15th or 20th in a international tournament. Jon Rahm was a regular winner of amateur events in his college days in America and once he turned pro the rest is history.

There are no quick fix solution but those two opinions that I suggested i.e. more govt. funding for fledgling and aspiring pros and more of our elite amateurs playing more events at home could make that all important transition from the amateur game to the pro ranks much easier. Anyways best of luck to McGee, Sharvin, Moynihan and McElroy for the 108 hole, six round Q-School marathon which starts on this Saturday.

Sounds like being caught between two stools if he has 12 EuropeanTour events next year (the weaker events, unlikely to be enough to earn a card) and also has to do enough to finish high on the Challenge tour. Sometimes it may be better to put on the eggs in one basket!

Obviously he should play the ET events when they don’t clash with the Challenge tour.

Gavin Moynihan has finished in T-20th in the Challenge Tour Grand Final in Oman today. He carded a three under 69 to finish on -3. He finished in 19th in the final Challenge Tour rankings, just 4 places outside the magic top 15 and just over 12,000 euro less than Bradley Neil, the man who finished 15th in the rankings.

Moynihan will now play in the European Tour Q-School Final Stage, the 6 round marathon, which starts on next Saturday in two courses Lumine Lakes and Hills Golf Club with all 156 players alternating between both courses and the final 2 rounds to be played exclusively in the Lakes course.

11 Irish golfers are playing in the Second Stage of Q-School with the top 21 or 22 players I believe qualifying from each of the 4 venues for the Final Stage. Here is a summary of how they are getting on so far after 2 rounds.

Desert Springs - 22 qualify - Projected Mark: 6 under: Jonathan Caldwell 5 under T-26th, Cormac Sharvin 2 under T-49th, Niall Kearney Level Par T-61st
El Saler - 21 qualify - Projected Mark: 1 under: Dermot McElroy 1 under T-19th, Brendan McCarroll plus 4 T-45th
Las Colinas - 21 qualify - Projected Mark: 4 under: Colin Fairweather 3 under T-24th, Michael Hoey 1 under T-41st, JR Galbraith 1 over T-55th
Panoramica - 21 qualify - Projected Mark: 6 under: Ruairdri McGee 8 under T-13th, Gary Hurley 6 under T-21st, David Carey 3 under T-45th

Moynihan currently 26th after 2 rounds in the Challenge Tour Grand Final in Oman (1 under for the tournament after a 73 today). Projected to be 22nd in the Challenge Tour rankings if things stay as they are. Hoping that in the third round in which he gets underway just after 5 tomorrow morning that he can shoot a round of 65 or 66 to get himself back into contention. Probably needs a (possibly solo) top 5 finish to get his playing privileges on the European Tour for 2018.

Speaking of Q-School best of luck to Niall Kearney, Colin Fairweather, JR Galbraith, David Carey, Brendan McCarroll, Jonathan Caldwell, Gary Hurley, Ruairdri McGee, Cormac Sharvin, Michael Hoey and Dermot McElroy who will all take part in Second stage European Tour Q-School which will take place in 4 venues across Spain starting tomorrow. The top 17 players (number subject to confirmation) usually qualify for the 108 hole, 6 round marathon Final Stage of Q-School which starts on the 11th of November, Saturday week.

He is going well again this week and has a great chance to earn his tour card tomorrow. In 4th spot and just 2 shots off the lead heading into the final round

Chase Koepka, younger brother of Brooks, is leading and already has done enough to win his card for next season.

I just hate seeing pros blaming everyone on the course. They are professionals at a spectator sports, get over the moaning about noises and movements, especially 50 yards away

This Rolex series has transformed the European Tour - well the events that are in the series anyway. It sort of is a tour within a tour now.

Course again a bit too easy - but not sure you can do anything about that.

We are very lucky Rory got us in it. There are a few areas of Europe important to golf not part of it - Germany - Spain - Portugal - Dutch all of Scandinavian loop. A little complex in that Omega are known golf sponsors too. Events also have other commercial links.

Then you have countries with no place in European Tour at all for cultural or political reasons- Turkey , Dubai , China , and South Africa.

I know it is all money and no one cares that much - but the last 4 events of the European tour are a joke.
