Just 4 Irish golfers have progressed onto European Tour Q-School Final Stage which will take place in Lumine GC in both the Lakes and Hills Golf courses. Cormac Sharvin who shot his lowest round (64 - 8 under) in his pro career, in the final round of Stage 2 qualifying in Las Colinas qualified yesterday along with Dermot McElroy in El Saler. Today Ruairdri McGee comfortably qualified for the 6 round marathon event in the delayed final round in Panoramica.

However there was awful heartbreak for Gary Hurley who missed out in a place in Final stage Q-School by one shot and one place. Despite shooting a highly commendable 6 under over 4 rounds, that still put him in a tied for 23rd with the top 22 qualifying from Panoramica GC. Despite his huge talent, the West Waterford GC pro has no status on any tour as things stand for 2018.

The other Irish player to qualify for Lumine is Gavin Moynihan. To summarize around 23 or 24 Irish players played either 1st stage or 2nd stage qualifying but just 3 have made it onto the Final Stage with Moynihan qualifying via the Challenge Tour rankings. That is a very poor return and really this needs to be a wake up call for all those involved in promoting Irish golf. Personally I think that the government needs to start increasing funding that it gives to Sport Ireland and Team Ireland Golf for fledgling pros and even invest on those elite amateurs seeking a future in the pro game. 94,500 euro was the 2017 figure that was handed by Team Ireland Golf to around 9 or 10 pros this year from the likes of Moynihan, Hurley etc. That is an unacceptably low figure.

I also think another issue that needs to be addressed is that a lot of Ireland's elite amateurs are not playing enough of our top amateur events here and are not getting the exposure of regularly contending in these events. The feeling of winning a South, West of Ireland or the Mullingar Scratch Cup is of much greater importance then finishing 15th or 20th in a international tournament. Jon Rahm was a regular winner of amateur events in his college days in America and once he turned pro the rest is history.

There are no quick fix solution but those two opinions that I suggested i.e. more govt. funding for fledgling and aspiring pros and more of our elite amateurs playing more events at home could make that all important transition from the amateur game to the pro ranks much easier. Anyways best of luck to McGee, Sharvin, Moynihan and McElroy for the 108 hole, six round Q-School marathon which starts on this Saturday.

Additional funding for lads trying to step up to your level would certainly be beneficial but in the amateur game there is just a huge gulf between lads that can win top events in Ireland and lads who will never even make a cut.

The amount of falsified handicaps is out of control and IMO a massive issue that needs to be addressed. All you have to do is go through championship results and lads are missing cuts week after week and still getting into the events year on year.

Everyone can have bad weeks/spells but with the handicaps some are playing off you'd expect the odd sub par round!!

Obviously my rant will not affect the elite looking to 'make it' but it is diminishing what were great championships here. Dates events are played are also not helping.

McGee incredibly comes home in 29 shots (7 under for his final 9 holes) to give himself a realistic opportunity of getting his European Tour card. Ruaidhri currently at 4 under with 8 under currently the projected mark to get on the European Tour for the 2018 season

Just a brief word on the status of Dermot McElroy for 2018. Dermot is guaranteed 7 invites as he is a member of Team Ireland Golf that gives out invites to some of our pros who are starting out as life as a pro. He will also get into another 5 to 7 events as he qualified for final stage of Q-School. Best of luck to Gavin Moynihan and Ruairdhri McGee though who will play in the final two rounds of European Tour Q-School with both players having every chance of getting their tour cards for 2018.

Very disappointing to hear Sergio Garcia being so dismissive and moody once again on an eve of a big tournament. The DP World Tour Championship is the concluding event of the end of another great season on the European Tour. However Garcia who could still win the Race 2 Dubai title sadly appears to have a "I don't give a damn" attitude. Once again it is very hard to like the grumpy Spainard with such childish comments. It is pathetic really.

Quite a harsh post. He was asked about his chances of winning the race to Dubai and he gave an honest answer because they are very slim.

He was actually very positive about his year in general.
