Today I did some detailing...

We have the "Today I Did Something To My Car" thread out in the main forum, and a lot of the posts on it pertain to detailing.
I thought it would be a good idea to give our various detailing activities a thread in their proper home.

I'll get the ball rolling.

Today ( ahem, last night really!), I snow foamed the car
Wasn't able to follow through and wash it properly as my back went, but couldn't believe how well it looked this morning!
In fairness I have a fair bit of LSP on it, but there was ten days worth of road film and tree sap on it.

Well impressed.

Yeah the rapid wax goes on wet. I think this is why it was a bit stubborn in places as the sun was drying the car.

Pet hate of mine, all those stickers!

If I was fortunate enough to buy a car brand new, I'd remove the following in the garage forecourt
- all stickers on rear window
- reg plate surrounds
- tax disc holder

Return them to the sales man - 'I dont remember agreeing to advertise your business on my property! Unless you are willing to return a sum of that money Ive just paid you???'

I don't mind a rear window sticker too much once its not real tacky or on the large side of them.

Most of my cars I have to admit I removed it all.

When I sold cars (second hand admittedly) the odd customer would request no dealer sticker etc etc ......... pas de probleme.

They never really bothered me either till a friend said it to me about my last car..the rear window was small enough and the sticker was actually taking up a fair bit of my line of sight in my rear view mirror..peeled off on the inside very easily so I just do it as normal now.

I always remove any dealer stickers the minute I get home after buying a car. If they want me to advertise for them they can pay me.

Funny you should say that.
When I bough this one a sales guy in anothe Ford dealership suggested I swap the plate surrounds and stickers to where he works and it would be worth a tank of diesel to me. !
Sounds a decent offer??

No doubt it would be a slap in the face to him if it were the other way round :pac:

Interesting... For a 70 euro tank of diesel I might be tempted.. in fairness my dealer filled my tank so can't complain to.much

100%. Though there is something worse. An Indy near me will replace your number plate surrounds with their branded ones, plus disk holder and add a their sticker to the inside of your back window. As if they had sold you the car, every time you get you car serviced with them, all without consultation.

I wonder what they would do with all the old tax discs and insurance discs. You see, I've a habit of keeping the old discs in the holder. It's a handy spot to keep them and very handy to check when an insurance company wants to know who insured the car previously. If they'd dumped them, I'd be very annoyed.

I wonder could you charge them the price of the service for the advertising.....

A few years ago my wife's car was in with the dealer 3 times over the course of about a month. I had removed the rear stickers, and each time it went in they replaced them, only for me to remove them when it came back. I actually had a good laugh with the sales guy in the end about it and left them on.

Yeah I was thinking about removing the lettering because the wiper actually brushes off it, probably doesn't help the longevity of the blade and in my experience finding a rear wiper blade can be a pain for some cars...

Mine over the weekend - after collecting from dealer.

De-tar
Rinse
De-iron
Rinse
De-iron again (heavily contaminated spots)
Rinse
Snow foam
Rinse
Clay bar
Wash with lambswool mitts
Dry
Seal (2 coats) - no polishing as its new paint and there were no marks on it.

You say you just dried it after claying.....should be washed then dried! You're rubbing any loose contaminants removed by the clay all over the paintwork again

Sorry you're right, I did wash it after the clay bar, I'll edit the above. I just forgot to add that step in. With poor enough weather and late start times it took me the best part of the Sat/Sun to do it, along with some sill and boot lip protector application.

Nothing too obvious on the clay bar but the paint was glass smooth after doing it so it definitely picked up something. The majority of the contaminants were iron (railway) fallout, parts of the car were absolutely covered in it; readily visible but that was removed before I ever touched the paint.

I did a fraction of work to the interior plastics and interior glass over the weekend.

The process was

Wipe down with Bilt Hamber Surfix 1:5 Water (1 part BH, 5 part water)
Wipe that off with a damp cloth
Dry the dash
50 Cal interior dressing applied
Glass cleaned with IPA
Glass cleaned again with IPA and allowed to dry
CarPro Fog Fight applied (sparingly)

The Fog Fight I applied sparingly. There was one trigger press for the side windows, 1 and a bit for the back window and two for the windscreen (3 for the Ducato windscreen)

Before you all start screaming - Yes I didn't wash the carpets, it was too damp Saturday to wet the carpet..............

On top of the usual wheels and body clean today I got out the hairdryer to remove dealer stickers, dressed the tyres and hit the outside glass with cleaner.

I'm not sure if I'm going to continue using AutoGlym Rapid Wax. It was quite stubborn to buff towards the end. I'm not sure if I need to do something with the microfiber towel but I don't want to have to 'work' it in or use any force.

It took 2 hours today. I got a hose so once paired with the pressure washer should help cut down time. I don't know if I can get a snow foam lance for a Vax PowerWash. If not I'll just get BH Auto Foam for the pump spray then at a later date I'll pick up tar and iron remover.

When I can get the Dry Me Crazy I'll probably get a better towel for the glass the two I have aren't great.

The AG Rapid Wax, I dont have any experience with, but sounds like one of two things - it started to dry out, or your microfiber became caked in product. If its the first, dont leave it so long, if its the latter, have a 2nd microfiber and when you start to feel the first grabbing, change to the 2nd.

Yes, you can get a snowfoam lance for the VAX powerwasher. I think its usually the same as the Lavor... if you stick up a picture of the connector that fits into the gun, I'l be able to advice.

The Dry Me Crazy is due in on Monday / Tuesday - back in stock on the website for anyone looking to order, and will be dispatched as soon as they land!

I'm debating whether or not to continue with the wax. I'll try get a picture of the connection on the pressure washer.

Any suggestions for glass? I think the cloth I have is ok for applying glass cleaner but I'd like to get a microfiber for buffing any remaining streaks.

Two things when doing glass

1: Streak free cleaner
2: A specific Glass Cloth

Combo of both make the chore of doing glass, I wont say pleasurable, but definitely an easier task!

Bloody rain, cleaned insignia yesterday full decon job ready to dewax and put sealants on today, started on glass to try car chems glass sealant, hail stones and rain out of clear blue sky.

Surprised old nano sealant still got a little bit of beading on it, must be 6 months since put it on and car barely got a once month wash until last week, cleaned 3 times since lol

Probably have start again next decent day, doubt that did glass sealant any good.

The joys of doing any cleaning this time of year. My car is need of a bad wash but unfortunately, any break in the weather is short-lived or else I'm at work

Pulled up to work to see the side of the car covered in brown splatters. Car was lovely and shiny when I went out to it this morning. All that work I did yesterday now feels like it's gone down the drain
