No, its not. There's no contest between them for a starting position, Earls and Rob Kearney will be starting at 11 and 15 almost certainly (assuming they're both fit).

But considering the irish 23 will be over 70% leinster at any given time it makes sense to have a leinster man as captain.

This is a good point in fairness. While the actual % will vary a little, having a Captain very close to as many of the team as possible is important in a game like rugby. I still wouldnt necessarily go with it as a rule though. If there is the right chracter and leadership x factor it could still be the right thing to go with a captain from a province with only a few representatives. Best, for example I think is of the right stuff to be a captain. Others like POM, probably not in an Ireland context:the shoulder chip and Munster First thing as criticised by ROG years ago, risks being counter productive when pulling the whole island together, even if it a strength in a Munster team.

if you look at the leinster certainties if all fit - furlong, mcgrath, toner, obrien, heaslip, sexton, henshaw, ringrose, r kearney.
heaslip, obrien and sextion would be favourites but looking from the outside you would imagine toner would be the ideal captain - guaranteed starter, rarely injured, plays in a key position and comes across as intelligent.

The only non leinster candidate is murray and maybe they will give it to him to ensure he stays in Ireland for the long term.

Dave doing the right thing really is uncooperative of him when it doesnt suit the agenda of some. He really needs to up his mistake levels so that those with preconceived views can point to evidence justifying those views. Otherwise, they are left looking a little silly.

DK should have gone for the corner. Piatau shoves him into touch and then Leinster forwards maul over from the ulster lineout.

I'm a fan of handsome Dave, but the truth lies somewhere in the middle here.

His mistake was not being deep enough to take the ball at pace. Larmour's pass actually couldn't have been flatter or faster, DK had just over run it (perhaps expected a chip over which I think there was space for).

But at the point DK caught the ball he was stopped and Piatau was making a hard beeline for that corner. I don't think any Irish winger beats Piatau to the corner in that situation.

Point A: Dave Kearney butchered it because he should have gone for the corner but he's too slow.
Point B: Dave Kearney couldn't have gone for the corner, and that wasn't his fault no one is quick enough.

My point: Dave Kearney probably could have gone for the corner if he had been hitting the ball at full pace, instead of stopped catching it behind him. He actually almost took half a step back to take it.

In fairness, the pass was loopier than I remember. But in this screenshot before the pass you see how flat DK was. If he's a few metres further back he runs on to it at full speed and we score in my opinion. As I said, it probably isn't his fault because he might have been expecting a grubber or something.

These really aren't points that were being made. The tweet was just a flat out attack of him that didn't attempt any constructive criticism or suggestion of what he should have done.

No one was beating Piatau to the corner there. Cut was absolutely the right idea, and he actually turns Piatau nicely, if he he straightened up a little earlier he may have been thru but he was definitely not going on the outside. Stupid criticism, par the course for Kearney's now adays.

My facebook is awash with people criticising Schmidt for leaving out Zebo and keeping in the Kearney's. Then when they have a decent outting on their return, people are stretching to criticise them in any way possible. Sad really.

Also I often find it odd at top level the failure to execute a 3 on 2 score. The cut out pass is never the option there, Larmour needs to pass to Rob, Rob needs to fix and give, try time. They're all too flat for that.

The tweet is stupid. I don't agree with the tweeter at all, and I think Kearney made the right decision in the situation, but if you look at the screenshot. Piatau was standing beside Larmour when he passed. If DK had hit the ball at speed instead of stopped he probably would have had a good chance of making the corner.

I know no one is here to debate this micro-point in one game. He otherwise had a pretty good game. As did Rob. The move in question is at the 13 minute mark in the TG4 highlights. And from people debating an Ireland selection view point we should probably be more concerned that our indisputably first choice hooker contributed to them losing the lineout.

it is poor positioning that makes Larmour take that option. but to criticise DK for not scoring then is wrong
