Negotiating price of Rolex

Hi All

Apologies if this has been asked before, i couldn't find a thread on it.

It's our fathers 60th soon and we were looking to get him a Rolex, we're in Dublin so Weirs looks the only option.

Do you know if they move on price at all, we were looking at getting a gift voucher so that he could pick the watch himself.

If we gave him cash, he's give the money back to us and say we're spending too much money.

Was wondering if Weirs do any negotiating on price because i'd assume with a voucher, we'd lose any power on moving price.

Also would Keanes or any other stores in Ireland have different prices to Weirs, or are they all the same?

You might get something off precious metals models, but otherwise you’d expect zero for the steel sports.

Ok thanks, we were looking at the date-just but ones priced around €5000-7000, wouldn't be able to go above that so was hoping the prices weren't fixed

With the exchange rate the way it currently is there might be better value in the likes of Lunns up north. Worth a phone call at the very least.

I bought my wife a lady datejust when we got engaged. She didn't particularly like it so just brought back into Weirs and upgraded it to the one she wanted without any issue. I can't imagine that we got any discount though.

Definitely.

Could easily be 700 euro in the difference with the exchange rate. Rrp in pounds significantly lower. You might get a discount of 5-10 percent as supply and demand not as big an issue.

Weirs will def give you a discount - all you have to do is ask.

I got 100 (could have been higher) off a €1400 Oris back in 2007.

I guess their mark up is huge so no bother to drop a few hundred rather than lose the sale.

Sorry, just saw you plan to get voucher. I'd say there's no negotiating with the voucher as they have your money already.
Can you get him into the shop and get him to pick one out?

Yes, they had one on 1st Nov last year IIRC, and possibly another one since then.

If we tried bring him to a store to get one, he wouldn't go, he wouldn't want us spending that much money on him, at least with a voucher, he'd have to get something, that's out thinking on it it.

Had a look on lunns website there, they don't have prices, will email them and ask for a price list, be interested in seeing the difference

Just go to the Rolex website and that’s the price. You’re not going to get a discount on a steel Rolex. Maybe if you’re a high value customer or buying a few at once, but otherwise no. They’ve the fear of discounting from Rolex and besides they’ll move that watch regardless. Even an unpopular model like an explorer II you can pretty much forget about it. Your options for a discount are UK, airport ADs and grey dealers - it’s worth noting even here how well rolex control their inventory and how little you’ll get off compared to nearly every other brand.

Don't forget about insurance as you'll need this. Might have to buy it through Weirs also as they're the ones who value the watch.

It would be a specified item on your house contents so don’t worry about that. You will usually need to supply the receipt or valuation to your insurer and it wont add much to your/their annual premium.

If you've just bought a new watch at (or near to) RRP I can't see how you would need a valuation. I would also imagine that Weirs aren't the only people who could value a Rolex.

Make sure that you have a picture wearing the watch. Heard of insurance companies asking for photographic proof of wearing an expensive item when claiming.

I hate that website format as I click on a Rolex there is part of me hoping of a price tag of 5k - just for the time it takes to open - then 25k pops up!!

Would anyone have a Rolex price list for duty frees?

OP, this might sound corney but maybe worth a try

Ask the dad for advice on a watch for a retiring colleague of yours or father in law or something like that.

Get him into the shop to help pick out a nice one ....

I would recommend Lunns in Belfast as well.
I picked up an explorer 1 there last year and saved 1k off the price at Weirs.
I still feel warm inside about this.

I would give them a ring first. If you could narrow down your quest it would help your cause. Stainless steel Rolex sports models are in short supply at the moment. I think the datejusts are more available.

You absolutely should get a discount, arrive with cash and explain that you are there to purchase a watch. I've purchased half a dozen Rolex in the past several years and have never failed to get a discount, stainless steel or PM makes no difference (except expect greater discount on precious metal). If you don's ask...

Never purchased from Weirs but have had excellent experience and first class service from Hartmann's in Galway. Ask for the owner Richard he is a great guy.

I was talking to Weirs about exchanging my BLNR against a 116618lb, and they wouldn’t even entertain a discount. However, Richard Hartmann was willing to negotiate, although he acknowledged that discounts - even on PM watches - would not be great, as Rolex has strict guidelines on this.
