Tax increases on cigarettes - are shopkeepers making a fortune?

It has become a virtual certainty that the duty on tobacco products is substantially increased in every budget. It is a no-brainer that if you are a seller of tobacco products, you would massively stock up before the budget and make a huge windfall profit afterwards by selling at the new price immediately after the budget on stock that you bought at the old price.
I was just wondering if this would be regarded as unacceptable profiteering or just a normal perk of the business.
I used to work part time in a pub and I noticed that stocks would be built up before a budget in anticipation of an increase in duty, (although the increase did not always happen).

You're failing (willfully or otherwise) to grasp the point which is price or the high cost of tobacco is a huge motivator to stopping.

Its not the only reason smokers want to cease but its a huge motivator to making smokers want to stop.

Clearly addiction will cause a compulsive need to smoke and that is a symptom of nicotine addiction but reasons for wanting to stop are the catalyst to stopping and price is most certainly a huge motivator.

A high price is also prohibitive for children buying them so also for that reason a additional 5er should have been put on the packet in my view.

You're simply wrong, like it or not ........... high prices for cigarettes are an excellent deterrent for people who are considering smoking for the first time but has no effect on a heavy smokers addiction whatsoever.

Unfortunately the World Health Organisation disagrees and their published studies which are available online show a clear correlation between increased tobacco price and decreased consumption.

The price of cigarettes have very little impact on people who currently smoke. I mean its economics 101. They are an inelastic product. A large increase in price has a small decrease in consumption. Again they are a legal drug.
