Travelers offering driveway cleaning

In our small estate in County Dublin we’ve been inundated over the last few weeks with travelers offering driveway cleaning services. They generally call during the day mid week. Has anyone any experience of using lads like these ?

Perhaps I'm a slob with very low standards but I have never looked at a driveway and thought "Jesus, that's filthy. Could do with a scrub"

They called up to me one evening before and did a fantastic job. I also had an old cylinder and a few radiators (soiled with paint) and they were happy to relieve me of what I considered rubbish. Gave them tea and sangiches when they were working. Lovely gents. They're not all bad before the venom starts spouting here.

Power wash my front driveway every year. Do a great job for a decent price. Very pleasant too.

That's not what most people in AH want to hear though!

I had this service offered to me about 10 years ago, my driveway was maybe 30 ft x 10ft.

Guy said he could do a good price of €700.

Needless to say I chased him.

I got to thinking that maybe they were just knocking to see if anyone in the house? Or am I prejudging them?

Are they insured, is the company registered and have they got a safe pass, do they have set up to pay tax.....

Got this along offering to paint sheds,tarmac etc but I'd rather do the power washing myself because I find it so satisfying

The rain handles all my driveway cleaning needs.
Some day a real rain will come and wash all the scum off me driveway.
Hopefully anyways. My driveway is in a bad f**king state

Mother-in-law had a bad experience with our nomadic friends, they cleaned the tarmac alright and 'refreshed' it with old engine oil.....was expecting them to return a few days later with a special offer on carpets as it took a day or so to notice the existing carpets were ruined

I don't know anything about the driveway cleaning but there's a young traveller lad who calls around to my mam every so often and cuts the lawn for her. He does a fine job and she does be damn glad of it so she does.

Invite them in and ask them to mind the house when you are away. Making friends is easy!.

Is he insured?
Does he pay tax on his earnings?
Does he tell the welfare about his earnings?

I would be wary of letting anyone into do any work as they could take you to the cleaners.

I always feel sorry for the travellers who are doing these services and doing there best. We get the odd few around here offering tarmac, gutter cleaning, painting barn roofs,etc. Lots of people are afraid to trust them because of past experience. We get the odd community alert text saying to be careful when they are in the area.

some travellers robbed my sick father pretending to becleaning his gutters
i had to do a combination f calling the gaurds and talking to them myself to make sure they went away
they gaurds were very not surprised which says a lot

IME if you say 'yes' to them once you may as well adopt them.

That's not to say they do a bad job, but I don't want a fixed arrangement for something I can do myself. If you say 'yes' once and say 'no' the next time that's worse than consistently saying 'no'. They'll likely be miffed.

There was a fairly nice traveller man who used to put his horse in the field out the back of our house. We agreed as it was good for cutting the grass. I'd give it fruit and carrots. He was responsible and there were no problems.

I don't think I'd want anyone under the age of 18 on my property to do odd jobs, whether they're travellers or otherwise, unless I knew their parents personally.
